Cinematic Era: 1974 Vintage

When I was editing my last film, ANIMALS RUNNING, a collection of images grouped themselves together but refused to be included in the film. I spliced them together and put them aside. At the same time I was experimenting with sound loops, inspired by John Lilly's work with dolphin language. Briefly, he discovered that when exposed to a repeating loop in a relaxed atmosphere, a subject would begin to hear sounds or words other than those recorded. I made some loops and found that the phrase "the struggle of the meat" was a particularly evocative one.

Charlemagne Palestine, holding a cheap black-and-white video camera, rides four of the rides at Coney Island, including the world-famous Cyclone roller coaster and, with his voice, keens his trademark drones while the rides progress, which, combined with the cacophony of sound that emanates from the rides, creates another version of the walls of sound for which he is known.

Superimposed images of a woman dancing.

A woman dances and mimes, her stark white image moves across a red floor, reflected in a fractured wall of mirrors. As she performs, her mirror image gradually assumes an autonomous identity so that what was a central relationship of self to self has become one self to other. Focii not only explores the construction of self, and the dynamics of self and other, but also the interaction between the viewer’s body and the body onscreen, raising questions on the nature of identification in cinema.

The glass window being installed - labour - being the subject ostensibly of the film...glaziers and glass having a history within representation from the german novella through Beckett's molloy through Duchamp though at the time none of that was conscious, it was for me about the endless superimpositions of a transparent signifier...five layers of optical superimposition (and as each in the lab darkens the scene, it necessitated lightening....each time one step more for each of five 'same' temporalities....) that alone for a viewer/viewing enough to unsettle any seeing through glass, any transparencies....shown at Knokke EXPRMNTL in 1974 to general incomprehension my own included.

A woman breaks up with her fiance because of his chronic lying. She still loves him and waits for him, in the hope that he will change his ways. However, when she learns that he has made plans to marry a nurse, she considers the proposal of her professor who has a crush on her.

A child witnesses his father's death at the hands of an international gang made up of Korean Park Do-seok, Kuroneko from Japan, and Jackson from the Soviet Union. The boy swears vengeance and prepares for the next 20 years, training in various forms of martial arts.

Phillip is a strapping young man who's been sent to spend the summer with rich relatives at their beautiful country estate. Although there are many outdoor activities to amuse him, including horses to ride and scenic delights for his photography hobby, soon his fancy turns elsewhere... He discovers he can observe his attractive aunt in her bedroom through a perfectly situated keyhole. Consumed with awakening desire, his agonizing, frustrating vigils at the keyhole become an obsession, and he begins to secretly photograph her - in her most private moments and in rapturous lovemaking with her husband. The arrival of an appealing young French maid his age merely fans Phillip's lust for his aunt, and he schemes to have her at any cost...even to using the new maid to lure his uncle away. As he carries out his plan, the film builds to a full realization of Phillip's erotic fantasies...a sizzling climax in the steam summer heat.

It provides views of how prisoners perceive the "inside" and the effectiveness of such programs as adult education and rehabilitation.
