In this segment, Dan Sandin demonstrates the routing of a camera signal through several basic modules of an Information Processor (IP), producing a "primitive" vocabulary of the effects specific to video.

The method actor uses imaginary stimuli, developing a repetoire of images that he can rely upon to evoke emotional responses.

Silent comedy.

The most important technical accomplishment of "Year of the Mice" is that, though silent, the visuals evoke the presence of sound. One of the little sons is practicing the violin. As he plays, Couzin focuses in on his arm and bow connecting with the violin strings. The image is shot with 8mm film using a 16mm camera and optical printed back up to 16mm. The result is a strong repetitious gesture created by splitting the original image in half through the shooting process. When projected, the upper and lower halves of the image are shown alternately, creating an intense visual rhythm which causes the action to blur. As the boy's movements become relentlessly frantic, we can almost hear the strained screeches of the instrument. Perceptually there is no sound but the visual tension created causes us to experience the image as though we are hearing him play. We experience form of synesthesia, and the rhetoric is effective: the discomfort is so great we want the boy to stop.

Thai folk songs and dances - such as the beautiful fingernail dance and the precision bamboo dance - are filmed in performance, as is a segment from the classical the epic poem/dance, the Ramayana. The program also looks at Thailand's rural cottage industries and river trade, explores temple ceremonies, architecture, and religious art as well as the Buddhist way of life in the monasteries and villages.

Focusing on the Civil Rights Movement and a 1970 protest in New York, For Personal Reasons was inspired by the Black Panthers and Malcolm X. An innovative mix of fact and fiction—a kind of critical fabulation—it juxtaposes militant speech with avant-garde jazz. The film won an Honorable Mention at the Grenoble Film Festival in 1973.

A comic cartoon, without commentary, showing that not everyone who rises to the challenge of sport can be sure of success. Pictured is a man with middle-aged flab who tackles the whole range of contemporary sports--swimming, bicycling, golfing, gymnastics, jogging--with great eagerness but equal ineptitude. At a time when physical fitness is much on the public mind, Sports Challenge is a friendly warning that fitness is not necessarily an inborn trait.

The outflow of population, mainly young people, from agricultural, mountain and fishing villages in Japan to urban areas became remarkable from around 1960, but the actual situation of Japan's depopulation, which is rapidly progressing in the shadow of high economic growth, was interviewed after 1970. Pick up the voices of the residents. We interviewed mountain villages and remote islands in Hokkaido, Tohoku, China, and Kyushu. The aging of villages and the rapid decrease of households affect all the lives of residents such as school consolidation, agriculture and forestry, and living road management, and the decline in village (community) functions is further accelerating remote villages.

Young-Ho and Seon-Hee fall in love during Korean War. As soon as they marry in a hurry, Young-Ho goes to a battlefield.

THE BICYCLE DRIVER emphasiies the legal rights and responsibilities of both bicyclist and motorist. Common rules of the road are demonstrated and the bicyclist's responsibility in vehicular traffic is delineated. The film makes the point that bikers have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists.

Examines the different ways in which three pupils participate in a high school history class.

Uses animation without narration to show six methods of birth control. Presents the use, advantages, disadvantages, costs, and effectiveness of the condom, the diaphragm, vasectomy, the intrauterine device, tubal ligation and the pill.

Shows the transitions the preschool child goes through in becoming a member of a group. The child usually comes into pre-school just having a sense of autonomous self. The film shows how a group of children, with the usual individual differences, learn to relate to others, adjust to the needs of others, and discover gratification in the process. like a nature film but with preschool kids. Lots of hitting and crying.

A film about the living conditions of slum dwellers in the city of Bombay. The candid interviews of slum dwellers reveal their scathing reactions to the slogan of Garibi Hatao, and the pretentions of politicians. These interviews also demonstrate in what inhuman conditions the slum dwellers lead their lives. The inter-cut interview with Mr. Kasbekar, Administrator, Housing Board, presents the official side of the problem.

Taking its title from a scene in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, in which Finnegan awakens from a dream, Hark! Hork! evokes natural and subconscious landscapes. Infusing the work with Joycean language and imagery, Gillette creates a visual and aural parallel to Joyce's stream-of-consciousness text. Melding abstracted, organic forms with dreamlike, beautifully composed still lifes, he creates a collage of thoughts, gestures and objects that contemplates the sensuality of nature and the fleeting nature of memory. This work reveals a complexity of formal strategy and a sophistication of editing exceptional for its time.

After the brief photographic preamble, an unstoppable storm of abstract textures in perpetual motion begins, a continuous torrent of organic images, an incessant cascade of expressionist splashes.
