During the Xmas break in 1971 I assembled a crew of artists, 3 on camera and 2 on sound, along with a few others to create a performance at the Topanga Mall in Canoga Park. I asked Don Drowty to assume the role of a candidate and meet people in the mall in character. At the moment the film started Don chose to change his role to become Evel Knievel, the motorcycle stunt showman of the time. The film was shot on Super 8 and the sound was recorded separately. This is the first synched version of the film originally shown in 1972 and now in 2015.

Named after a little Indian Hamlet in the southern state of Oaxaca this ethnographical documentary deals with the voluntary work, called "TEQUIO" which is used by the people of these very poor communities to empower some local projects. It represents a clear example of a socially concerned film production, during the seventies this was the case with many film documentarists.

Short documentary film that addresses the negative impact of imperialism in Latin America, focusing on the Chilean situation. Among images that denounce the inequality perpetuated in the region, as well as the representative faces and practices of the imposed system, the film expresses a critical stance against fascism that, towards the end and using images of the construction of the Santiago subway, becomes optimistic about the change represented by the Unidad Popular (UP).

In 1972 I burrowed myself into Paris with an even stronger determination, this time not for all of Paris, just to steal her ‘diamond’, The Eiffel Tower. My Bolex , sound recording film,… a technology to contrast this identifiable subject. Here banked against the monumentous image, I had to form a rigorous emphasis around my now accumulated processing data. In trying to attribute a visual rhyme in film on the baroqueness of geometrical animation, this film has languaged its own Sound/Silence. – P.B.

For seven minutes Waśko filmed the wall of the Film School in Łódź; he then cut up the film stock, mixed up the fragments and edited them together randomly. In effect, the only stable element of the film is the flat, unchanging wall. Because of the editing method, what is happening in front of the wall (people walking, electric carts passing by) can never be finally established. The artist thus prevents the illusion of three dimensions from materializing. He draws attention to the flat wall, which in turn recalls the flatness of the film stock. Therefore, like The Straight Curve, Wall features an attempt at reducing the 3D illusion of the film to two-dimensionality, more adequate to its physical properties.

[Following overview courtesy of Art Basel] Appendice per una supplica shows a pair of male and female hands against a black background gesticulating an entire repertoire of possible meanings and interpersonal tensions. The film reveals La Rocca’s attempt at developing a language that is not pre-coded by society. This dealing with the social construction of meaning was influenced by her work for Italian television, where she created and presented shows for deaf-mute persons. It is the very first film in art history showing manual gestures.

Shot on a September afternoon, in 1971, on the lawn and inside the studio of Hans Richter's Connecticut home. The artist talks informally with Cecile Starr about his first experiences as a filmmaker, and about the interrelationship of his films and his paintings, scrolls and collages. Excerpts from Rhythm 21, Ghosts before breakfast and Race symphony help illustrate Richter's comments about how these pioneer avant-garde films were made in the years between 1921 and 1929.
