His family goes through misfortunes, with his father dying and his sister being raped by the dacoit Mangal Singh. Ganga himself dies preventing a disaster at the dam. The dam is eventually built bringing greenery to an arid region. His wife bears a son and lives on in the village.

A young girl witnesses a violent and ultimately fatal act between her mother and another man and it emotionally scars her for years to come. As a young woman, she takes a vacation with a more worldly girlfriend to Sardinia, and in doing so, attracts the attention of a young man in the village. Despite her interest in the man her haunted past prevents her from developing a normal relationship with him.

A state senator is murdered outside his home, and the police arrest a strange man described as having "icy eyes" for the crime. An Italian reporter finds a stripper who claims to have been an eyewitness to the assassination and saw the man with the icy eyes commit it. At his trial she testifies against him, and he's sentenced to death. However, the reporter soon begins to find holes in the stripper's story, and other circumstances arise which makes him believe that the wrong man may have been convicted

Hamdy falls in love with Faten whom he tries to approach her by claiming that he lost his eyesight. Faten feels sorry for him and tries to help him in his crisis by taking him to her uncle, the ophthalmologist, so he begins to stall her.

The first part "Zhenya" tells about a boy Zhenya, who goes to kindergarten. The story tells about his relationship with his peers and how he was unfairly punished. Will he be able to act manly in this situation? The second part "Buba" is about a 11-year-old musician from a Georgian village, who one day is given a chance to prove himself among adult musicians - he is offered to replace one of the members of an amateur orchestra.

The tribulations of a hardy shepherd and a young boy fighting local peasants in order to have the right to graze his sheep. The old man is killed by some enraged peasants but the young boy carries on his work and battle.

This German language film is said to be loosely based on a story by Edgar Allen Poe. It is difficult to say, as there is no story to be discerned in this non-stop pastiche, heavy with symbolism but with no other distinguishing features. It was, however, a German entry in the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.

As well as being a unique portrait of the US army at work, the film is also a fascinating snapshot of a time and place at a defining moment in American history.
