Cinematic Era: 1970 Vintage

Series of six short 16mm films by artist KP Brehmer examining physical dimensions and spatial expression of capital.

About three years in the making, it was put together out of hundreds of fragments culled from a pretty formidable archive of of found, borrowed, snitched and home-made material. All this going on late at night to the sounds of John Peel's famous record programme featuring the most adventurous music prior to Punk - some of which inevitably found its way onto the sound-track.

In this short self-portrait, Ubu Films co-founder Perry mines his archive of family photographs, home videos and exhibited 16mm film to fast-forward, reverse and freeze-frame narratives and reminiscences.

'El Fin' drastically divides youth into two waves: there are couples composed of girls who paint oil landscapes and fall in love with young people with long hair, to go to the countryside to enjoy love and peacefully sing protest songs. But not for long: to the chords of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" will appear a priest, a soldier, an official and a charro to interrupt the idyll and harass the youth soundly rebellious.

The film presents three faces of Berlin as a visual puzzle: the old imperial and fascist Berlin; the newly reconstructed Berlin around Breitscheidplatz; and finally, Berlin as evoked by the elderly Adelheid Pickert, an opera singer of almost 90 who was famous as a Mahler interpreter around 1910. This third Berlin is that of a future European center freed from the weight of the past. Pickert's portrait — whose statements are described as "strangely brilliant" — creates a counterpoint to the atmosphere of Berlin in the summer of 1970.
