Still in the delivery room, he started singing his song. And on he went his entire life. The song is not ugly, the voice is not unpleasant, but everything is constantly the same. He is trying to blend in, but it always ends in disapproval, kicking out, beating, harsh reaction. Nevertheless, he didn’t give up.

"I'm walking through my city...", sings a cheerful pop singer. She fervently praises the new metropolis of East Berlin. As an emphatically lively, often anthemically condensed revue, the film tells of the "growth and development of our new capital". Accompanied by cheerful music, the camera indulges in high-altitude views, shows squares whose fountains, benches and green spaces are designed to make you forget that you are in a big city, as well as visitors from all over the world in top hotels. An emphatically cheerful, yet meaningful insight into the brave new GDR world.

Devensky's evolutionary theory... is considerably more subtle. The same man as in CATERPILLARS and ANTS is sitting alone in an apartment with an immerse accumulation of debris, listening blackly to a fragile Kreisler-like melody on an old gramophone. During the film the camera peers at him and his junk and even swoops around in lengthy tracking shots. At times it rests solely on close-ups of his craggy face (another Devensky preoccupation). The man begins to freak out as "phantoms" appear and collapses amid the rubble. The melody appears once more and this time he reacts to it. If the film's title indicate a continuation of thinking in "Proof" then what is seen is modern man surrounded by his accumulation of things, at first fulled and insensitive to beauty (the fragile melody) but finally becoming responsive to it after harrowing rite de passage" –Richard Koszarski, New York American

'I tried to make a kind of environment in the room where I lived in Kentish Town and to make a film within it. There were pieces of paper and screwed up, transparent gels hanging from the ceiling; it was quite dense in some parts. I wandered through it with a camera and then other parts were filmed on the rooftop at St Martins. I think I was just very much trying to find my way in a whole new area of work. I remember it involved a lot of refilming, which was the part I liked. The process was very fluid, similar to painting. I got quite interested in the specks of dust and dirt on the film and the re-filming gave me a chance to look at that more closely. Probably the thing that attracted me to film was the light ... the kind of floating quality you can get, images suspended in light.'
