In Frame (1969), Richard Serra emphasizes the disconnect bewteen the real space of the cinema and the illusory space of the screen. We first see Serra's hands methodically measuring and marking the boundaries of the film frame, followed by the projected image of a blank surface whose perimeter is similarly marked. The surface is then moved aside to reveal a window which looks out upon a bustling city street. The In the final stage, Serra interacts with the projected image of the window, remeasuring and remarking its borders.

He took up the camera as other people take the pencil and paper. In 1968 he presented his first film Lydia at the Solothurner Filmtage. His appearance as a Filmmaker was absolutely unexpected: the only lyric poet of the film, who succeeded virtually without effort in turning his inner life outwards, creating dreamlike images. With a juvenile absoluteness, innocently arrogant, the pale, gaunt man had put the following sentence in the festival paper: "Look, what kind of a film Reto Andrea Savoldelli has created for you with five thousand Swiss Francs." He pitched himself as "First exponent of the Swiss Immigrant's Cinema". (Martin Schaub)

«Lasting barely ninety seconds, the images from 'Solo' show a lone woman who is masturbating with a statue of St Anthony in a domestic and religious setting. It was shown just once at the 5th Jornal do Brasil Mesbla Amateur Film Festival, in 1969. The masculine gaze of the time merely declared these images “iconoclastic”, “erotic” and “comical”. Ashamed by the negative response to her work, the director decided to self-censor, hiding her artistic past and her films from the world» —Izabela Silva.
