Barcelona, 1967. Hans Fromm, a German-born architect, lives an well-ordered everyday life. He has become the target of an antifascist death squad though. The team, whose other members are Georges, the son of a deportee liquidated by Schmidt craving for action, Raphaël, a mercenary type, Nils, the photographer and Romain, watch Fromm's every move until Julius, convinced at last that the quiet German is their man, gives the green light for the operation. They manage to lure the former Nazi to an old house but Schmidt/Fromm won't let himself be captured so easily...

In inner Copenhagen, in the real old town, in greengrocer Mortensen's property right under Tagskægget, live three good friends: painter Richard Hansen, painter Steffen, sculptor Max, and their friend Louise Mørch. All three have something very boring in common: they are unknown and penniless. Suddenly, it seems that luck is smiling on them. Charlottenborg has accepted the painting that Richard submitted. Excited, he heads to the exhibition, only to discover that the selection committee has accepted the two packing box lids he used to protect his painting, lids that he uses every day to wipe his brushes on.

Kerekes believes he is wanted by the police when his friends play a practical joke in this unusual comedy drama. He returns to his hometown where he was accused of turning a Jewish druggist and the druggist's wife over to the Nazis. With his friends following him, Kerekes tries to find out what became of the couple after they were deported. After being subjected to a mock trial by his friends - and found guilty - Kerekes becomes despondent and attempts to kill himself. Flashbacks and hallucinations are employed to tell this story that occurs during the Eichmann trial. Both the film and Antal Pager gained some unwanted publicity when a Variety article from April 23rd, 1967 accused Pager of being a Nazi collaborator for his role in an anti-Semitic film during World War II.

Breakaway plays out like a visual symphony. A prototype for the best (but still, lesser) contemporary formalist music videos, like Peter Care’s “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” and “Drive” (both for REM), Conner’s movie is an experiment in the visual language of film. But no matter how powerful a formal analysis of his filmmaking process may be in suggesting how Conner’s rhythms affect us, there is much in Breakaway – in Basilotta’s brash and unbridled self-assertiveness, in Conner’s feverish camera style, and even in the uncomplicated honesty of Cobb’s catchy lyrics and tune – that defies verbalisation… and must simply be loved! -- Senses of Cinema

Using contemporary artistic representations in words and pictures, the documentary intends to create an overall view of the historical significance of the 450th anniversary of the Reformation in the historical image of the GDR. In terms of content, the film is limited to the city of Wittenberg as the historical center of the Reformation events. This period is seen as the beginning of the early bourgeois revolution, as Luther also made a certain contribution to the replacement of feudalism by the rising bourgeoisie by initiating the reformatory efforts. Lucas Cranach the Younger's panel painting "The Reformers in the Lord's Vineyard" runs like a common thread through the documentary and thus vividly conveys to the viewer the social upheavals of the 16th century between the Reformation and the German Peasants' War.

Teutonic sentimentality is lampooned, and the narrow minded are held up to ridicule. Some fine performances outweigh the passages of unintentional humor in this second film from director Ulrich Schamoni.
