The portrait of a young bakery worker in Swabia. A vague desire for something else lurks between her sentences and the images of her everyday life.

The Soviet authorities tried in every possible way to hide the truth about the shootings in Babyn Yar, because the victims there were mostly Jews. In 1966, on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the shootings, for the first time a small group of Kyivans, together with the famous writer Viktor Nekrasov, gathered near Babyn Yar to honor the memory of the victims. Employees of the Kyiv Documentary Film Studio found out about it: cameraman Eduard Timlin and director Rafail Nakhmanovych. Under the guise of shooting a film about the Soviet police, they decided to record this event on tape.

The animators illustrate the biblical story with a beautiful cutout and a philosophical commentary. The film was made in the cut-out technique. Its background is based on the style of old engravings and contemporary graphics.

Dealing with the subject of the soul and its relation to modern man in his contemporary environment, the story is how a man, caught in a Twentieth Century web of materialism, is introduced to the complexities of the spiritual self. The film concerns a man, violent in nature, driven much against his will into a realization of his soul. At first he combats this realization and fails. He tries to master it and fails. He tries to destroy it and fails. Finally, in the only way he knows how, being faithful to his nature, he accepts it by offering his whole being to its truth. He uses his nature as a prayer and offers his beating heart.

Filming of the documentary began on the very day news broke of Camilo Torres’s death on February 15, 1966. It captures the reactions of the university student movement (protests, clashes with the police, symbolic burial), footage of the places where Camilo Torres served as a professor in the Sociology Department at the National University and as its chaplain, as dean of the Higher School of Public Administration, at the offices of his newspaper Frente Unido, and shots of news reports regarding his death “somewhere in Santander.”
