What the film emphasizes is the surrealistic drama of symbolic self-destruction that Kren drew out of Brus’ action, pacing out each gesture so that one gets a tense, iconoclastic revelation of a man covered in white plaster lying surrounded by razor blades and a range of instruments looking as if they have been taken from an operating theatre. The story of the film is set in a village of Chhattisgarh (then Madhya Pradesh) which has prevalent caste discrimination. It starts with the landlord talking to the Purohit (Priest), and later with his wife Dulari regarding how he wants to take Charandas (who belongs to the [Satanami] community) to court for land acquisition. Fulwati (Charandas' wife) asks him to settle the matter instead of fighting over it. The Purohit on the other hand, tries to instigate differences between Satanami community among upper caste people through his preaching. But the kids in the village seems to question caste discrimination and discuss it in their school. After some years, Nayandas (son of Charandas) goes to Agriculture University for higher education & becomes good friends with Ravikant Tiwari.
A fortuneteller is under the support and respect of the people of his village. He is practically the one who can do anything, but the arrival of a teacher from Literacy Campaign proves harmful to his profits. So he goes on to sabotage. The teacher manages, with meditation and patience, to reveal the true personality of the fortuneteller, so that the people who previously believed in the him, begin to gravitate toward the teacher and attempt to build their own village with his guidance.
