"I wanted badly to make an animated short and had no camera available. I did have some old, unused film stock and several roles of 16mm sound tape. So I used that- plus a variety of of discarded surgical instruments and the sharp edge of a screwdriver- by cutting, etching, and painting directly on both film and tape."

Little Walk (1964) is Michael Snow’s first gallery film installation. It arrives as a diplomatic envoy from New York’s art and film worlds of the sixties – an alternative cinema informed by Minimalism and Happenings, materializations of art as experience projected on Snow’s trademark Walking Woman. "Little Walk" is a dynamic, 12-min silent loop that embodies the experimental nature characterizing the artist's works during that decade. From 1961 to 1967, Snow centred his artistic endeavours across all mediums around the naturalistic outline of a youthful woman. Initially crafted from a cardboard cut-out, the walking woman's image evolved into both the instrument and focal point of Snow's creative expression. "Little Walk," was created for an exhibition curated by Jonas Mekas called "Expanded Cinema." Originally captured on 8mm film, the piece has since been transferred to DVD.

The classical Epic is reduced to the bare bones of the action. Despite the seven minutes of turbulent action, it is actually a slow film: in the war against Kreon, one of Antigone's brothers fights for the king, one against him. Both die. One of them is buried; the other is left lying on the street. Antigone goes against the king's wishes and wants to bury her brother. As a punishment Antigone is buried alive behind a wall. Her fiancé, Haimon dies, overcome with grief. Haiman's mother, Eurydike, is so upset by his death that she hangs herself. And just as the old soothsayer predicted, the king himself finds no happiness from all this death: he is killed. That makes 6 deaths, even though the war is over.

Erkki Kurenniemi was arguably one of the first artists to propose or fantasise about a complete cultural surrender to cyber existence, and his entire career, covering such diverse fields as artificial intelligence, music, engineering, film, dance or rhetorics, testifies to this desire to escape the limits of the human body and transgress into a different dimension, bordering on techno-fetishism. In his 1964 short Electronics in the World of Tomorrow, Kurenniemi presents a slideshow of the most aseptic signs of technological imagination: diagrams, chips, machines, cold surfaces. But footage of human warmth also comes up - mostly in black and white, as if to give humans the status of a memory. Originally silent, the film was in this version endowed with a electronic music piece by Kurenneimi himself: a cold, aggressive soundtrack that could be said to present technology as a potentially menacing affair, although this is a reading that the director would certainly refute.

Director Márta Mészáros working with cinematographers Tamás Somló and István Zöldi made several documentary-like artist portraits. These films cover not only artistic methods and resulting masterpieces, but emphasis is also placed on the surrounding landscape and built environment. Szentendre, one of Hungary’s most attractive towns, is a magnet for all that is beautiful, providing local artists with endless subject matter. The director’s picture provides a backscenes glimpse into the studios of László Balogh, Jenő Barcsay, Endre Bálint, Béla Czóbel, Pál Deim, Dezső Korniss, Piroska Szántó and Lajos Vajda. Zoltán Latinovits narrates.

Our story begins with The Red Hen’s brother and their parents being slaughtered by the evil Queen Gedren’s army because The Red Hen rejected the Queen’s sexual advances. The Red Hen survives violent assault by Gedren’s troops, and even gives Gedren a kind of souvenir: a brutal scar on her face. Later that night, The Red Hen is visited by a spirit who grants her the strength to seek her revenge. In her quest, The Red Hen accepts the company of the mighty Lord Kalidor, but also gives him a warning: she will never lie with any man unless he can defeat her in a swordfight. Kalidor challenges her and they spar, but neither of them is able to defeat the other. They call it a draw. Kalidor at least wins her heart.

Short news clip sees Reg Harcourt talks to new volunteer special constable Astley Lloyd Blair in the city of Gloucester. Blair, who had previously served with the police in Jamaica, had broken in to the police force which, like every other force in the UK at that point, was a whites only operation. His duties appear to be traffic related and the Chief Constable thinks that he'll only be working the summer months. So despite this minor victory there was still a long way to go.
