It's Saturday lunchtime in a small town near Munich and there's not much going on. The local bank is already closed, doors and windows are barred. The few passers-by in the main shopping street do not notice that a violent crime is being committed behind these windows. When the police later take up the investigation, a young bank employee becomes the only witness. His statements seem contradictory. And yet it is several other people who now have to struggle with conflicts of conscience. The more gaps in the police's chain of evidence, the more serious the decision to tell the truth and risk their own happiness. "In my filmography, An Engineer’s Assistant (1963) is called my “first film.” This PR film on the safety of the Japanese National Railways was designed to be “self-criticism” after the big accident on the Joban line at Mikawashima Station, which had occurred in 1962. Right after the events back then, the responsibility for the accident was considered to be negligence of the engineer and the engineer’s assistant. The topic of this project was the promotion of a new device to avoid accidents. However, I had seen that the true cause of the accident was a congested service schedule, and I consciously placed emphasis on the depiction of the actual work of the engineer and his assistant, and of those who had chosen the route and were responsible for safety on the line on which the accident took place."

A young flower girl on the Quai aux Fleurs, disappointed by a missed rendezvous, takes to the banks of the Seine to savor her disappointment. Her neighbor, a tramp, transforms himself into a "handsome young man with a big car", who offers her consolation in the form of an escapist trip through Paris by night. This journey into the Paris of "champagne and love" is a rapid overview of all the most famous and undressed night-time spectacles. Sound and color are as mediocre as the selection of acts presented. The hobgoblin magician then takes the young girl to the land of country dreams. It's here that the ridiculous adds to the bad taste. From unclothed, ungainly naiads, we move on to a hunt in which the game is a shivering, unenviable nymph. In the end, the young girl returns to the reality of the flower quay and her repentant fiancé.
