"...it had no plot. The film was more a study of people's behavior, shot in 16mm with a hand-held camera, which was hidden most of the time. In its execution it was like my New York film 58-59, except that it was filmed in sunlight almost the whole time, on a public beach, and in the cafes nearby. There was no spoken commentary, only the actual sounds and typical Cuban jukebox music." - Nestor Almendros, A Man With a Camera

"My first film, THE PATH, was based on a dream about a group of people on an ‘outing’ or a picnic. The people in the dream meet and greet one another and then walk around and through old houses, barns, and buildings. Inside these structures they pass by other people involved in various activities. A woman is folding clothes. A man is making paintings. A young girl is sitting in front of a mirror trying on different necklaces." - Richard Myers. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2007.

I Was a Teenage Rumpot was made in 1960, when George and Mike, the twin brothers Kuchar, were all of eighteen years old. Though their films would grow in thematic complexity, Rumpot already shows the visual energy, dynamic music, and anarchic, twisted plot development that so endear the Kuchars to audiences. The outlandish makeup and onscreen behavior would make Jack Smith (of Flaming Creatures) proud. In this context, a sudden moment of feigned modesty (when one woman is discovered undressing) is ironic indeed. --Andy Ditzler

Early on, Ugo Ulive, with his short film Como el Uruguay no hay (1960), seeks to raise awareness and involve the viewer in political action and its radical transformation. Through a collage of animations, archival footage and a counterpoint sound montage, Ulive attacks traditional left-wing and right-wing politics and exposes the contradictions of a pillar of national identity: Uruguay's famous democracy. Note that we are in 1960 and while the voice over presents Montevideo as "a small agitated city", the images show a tense scenario with social protests and a politicized urban space with the presence of mounted police.

"Directed in 1960, the second short film from Champeaux studios, Villa Mon Rêve is undoubtedly Albert Champeaux's emblematic film. Awarded in many festivals (Cork, Venice, Acapulco, etc.), it will be distributed internationally by Rank. This is the beginning of the adventures of Mr Schmtz, a nerdy crook with many faces. Three other short films will display the failed scams of this funny guy. This film, broadcast in 1961 as the first part of cinema sessions, is incredibly modern, benefited by the magnificent sets by Pierre Watrin and very contemporary animation and production. This film, which comes the ages without a wrinkle, was chosen by the second French TV channel (at the time Antenne2) for the transition period to color broadcasting." - https://youtu.be/4Req92LU290
