Near the city of Verny, surrounded by Cossack patrols, the paths of three friends diverge. Instead of his native aul, Nartai finds only ruins. The death of his mother, the disappearance of his fiancée, and the oppression from the stanitsa ataman — all this forces Nartai to join the revolutionary struggle. Hunger and poverty, and pleas for bread greet the blacksmith Azim in his native Zhetysu. A Cossack horse kills Azim’s little son with a kick of its hoof when the boy reaches for scattered grains of bread. Grief turns the blacksmith into the leader of a starving, rebellious crowd. The fate of the third soldier is not easy either. Pavel Zernov, pausing only briefly at the bedside of his dying little son, hastens to rejoin his comrades who have gone underground.

Visual images consist entirely of Indian miniature paintings, while an off-screen narrator traces the rise of this art form within the courts of Akbar (1542-1605), who united what is now India and Pakistan, and his son Jahangir (1569-1627). Two schools of the miniature paintings, done by anonymous artists, flourished after Akbar established unity and peace across what had been many smaller states: the Moghul (Islamic) school and the Rajput (Hindu) school. The Moghul paintings record the events of the court, while the Rajput school connects physical beauty and, in particular, the longing of women to the transcendent values of the spirit.

Ignazio Buttitta, in front of a billboard with drawn representations, narrates the problems of Sicily in the manner of Sicilian storytellers. This is followed by images of the poor life of the people in the barracks of the Sicilian countryside and the uncomfortable conditions of a school. Poverty does not spare even the middle classes, who live in such conditions as to be forced to emigrate anyway. Ignazio Buttitta explains how the natural riches of Sicily do not end up for the benefit of the population. The composition of the Sicilian parliament, the conquests of the PCI, the administrative embezzlements of the DC are also illustrated. Buttitta ends with the memory of Salvatore Carnevale, dedicating a song to him.
