Cinematic Era: 1953 Vintage

Lindsay Anderson's early documentary film of a British amusement park, the irony of its manufactured fun on full display.

The plot concerns a songwriter, played by Jacques Sernas who leaves his sweetheart and publisher when he learns that he is going blind.

Gaston Duboutois and Catherine Berton love each other, and are about to play Romeo and Juliet in their small provincial town. The industrialist Duboutois is opposed to his accountant Berton, both of whom are running for parliament. Tempers flare and invective quickly escalates. In the end, Duboutois wins and Berton loses his position. Although futile and foolish, it's the excellent Mme Duboutois who brings peace to the situation, brings about reconciliation and helps the two children to unite.

An American soldier stationed in England is ready to go on his honeymoon with his new wife when his ex-wife, a gorgeous blonde, shows up and insists that they're still married. His two buddies try to help him out of his predicament, but his troubles are only just starting.

Anwar Wagdi plays vagabond musician Alfredo, who comes across an abandoned baby in the night. He tries his best to get our heroes someone to take it and raise it. When that fails, he has no choice but to raise it on his own. He names the child, Dabab, after the beautiful woman he's encountered on the street. Years pass and Dahab grows up to be the Faryuz, who is actually cute, talented and far less grating than our Ms. Temple. Many Chaplinesque hijinks ensue as Alfredo and Dahab play music on the streets, try to scam free food wherever they can and convince the owner of a successful nightclub to let Dahab perform.

This quick look at Lisbon begins with aerial footage of the port city as the off-screen narrator provides some history of a seafaring, colonizing nation, of destructive earthquakes, and of contemporary construction. Then it's on to famous buildings and monuments, a look at female fishmongers who ply neighborhoods with baskets of fish on their heads, a survey of two nearby resort areas, watching a town's annual running of the bulls, and a visit to a bullfight, where the bulls are not killed.

"Mammy Water" is mother sea, source of food. Jean Rouch filmed this short documentary in the Gulf of Guinea, in Ghana, where is held a colorful festival, the Chama, in which the participants offer cassava, gin and tobacco to the spirits of water and sacrifice a white ox to thank them and express their gratitude and respect.

Vernon and Eddie are two bumbling shoe store clerks who accidentally pay for a purchase with a bad check from a depleted bank account. Desperate to retrieve their misplaced checkbook, which they inadvertently handed to a customer, they track the individual to an apartment. Their frantic search quickly turns chaotic as they find themselves tangled up with the woman in the apartment and her highly jealous husband.

Mrs. Nínive Cánovas Cannesi (Marshall) comes back from a long tour visiting Europe and not even realizes that her house is being inhabited by two jobless and homeless bandits (Tin Tán and Tun Tún) with master keys who had been living there worry free. They all share the house for a period of time, unknowingly to each other, in a series of well crafted and perfectly timed scenes where Catita and Tin Tán can be in the same room without seeing each other... When Tin Tán notices her presence, poses as the help, intercepting the real employees and sending to the north pole, literally. So now that Catita has them at her service, she can take time for her real goal, the foundation of a House for old people so they can live happy until the day they die, but Tin Tán and Tun Tún keep getting in her way and complicating everything...

A heartwarming tale of good-samaritanism: A poor but large-hearted young man gives shelter to three helpless, forlorn people in his home--an abandoned railway coach. However, tensions arise in the group when he marries one of the inmates, a destitute young girl, since one of the other inmates loves her too. The group breaks up and the coach is abandoned. Time passes, fortunes turn, and penitence brings the group back together.
