Introduction to the city of Turku and its history.

The passengers of an airplane wrecked in the Negev desert are rescued and brought to a budding Zionist community (The film was shot at kibbutz Revivim, and its plot corresponds with the history of the kibbutz). Some are in search of rest, the others eager to give a hand and work. Eventually all join the shoveling and building. That night, a group of new immigrants, among them Holocaust survivors, arrive to join the mixed group. Within a while, the war arrives. Yoshke, the community's most dedicated member, encourages his brethren to stay and fight, citing the community’s slogan: “Ein Breira” – “There is no choice”. When supplies are dropped almost within enemy lines, Yoshke ventures out to retrieve them. He is wounded, and dies upon completing his mission. The film concludes with words from Yoshke’s diary, bearing encouragement for new immigrants to Israel.

A film on soil conservation, showing problems facing farmers in different areas of Canada. Many scenes of soil eroded, gouged and leached out by water, and of soil blowing away, prove the ominous necessity of understanding and preserving the land if we are to continue to reap vital crops. The development of soil through the centuries, the particular conservation problems in eastern and western Canada, and how soil fertility may be restored and maintained are dealt with in detail.

On piloting ships into Sydney harbour.

Created in 1949 by the U.S. Army, "The Medical Effects of the Atomic Bomb" represents an early attempt to describe the impact of bomb effects and radiation exposure to the American public. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima four years earlier is used as the primary example, with graphic footage shown of the devastated city. What's not shown are the many sick and injured survivors — a strange omission given the film's title. The real point of the film seems to be that a nuclear attack is survivable so long as society makes preparations for that eventuality, a standard Civil Defense message that would be refined in the coming decade. Once the incredibly powerful H-bomb entered the picture however, the very concept of Civil Defense became obsolete.

This documentary film traces the Marshall Plan's role in revitalizing Germany's coal industry after World War II. The Marshall Plan enabled German volunteers to migrate to the Ruhr, find jobs, and receive training in mining. The new jobs improved the German economy and European industry as a whole, which also benefited from the new energy sources. The film describes advances in Great Britain and France that resulted from the Marshall Plan, and contrasts the Soviets' refusal to participate in similar programs.

This short film from 1949 introduces us to the Gitxsan and Tsimshian First Nations of northern British Columbia. These peoples of the Skeena River exist in two worlds. Ancient totem poles tower against the mountains and the forests, old graveyards reveal fragments of shared history, and traditional crafts are still practiced on the reserves. But in the school games, in a wedding complete with white veil and white rice, and in the sawmill, we see how other ways of life are being adopted.

Ed, a teenager, applies for a job, but upsets his interviewer, Mr. Wiley, by criticizing a former employer. Mr. Wiley tells Ed the story of two brothers, Bob and Walter, who worked for him. Bob was neat, deferential and went along with the program and was promoted, while Walter was sloppy, surly and ungrateful, and was fired. Ed begins to think that being a company man maybe isn't so bad after all.

First, Mrs. Duck Jones' goats eat his suitcase, followed by her rest-disturbing mishaps, and then he learns that the old dilapidated building he is in is inhabited by the ghosts of various animals. He departs the premises in a hurry.

A documentary intended to promote tourism in the Belgian Congo. It was sponsored by the Belgian airline SABENA. While promoting tourism and emphasizing how easy and comfortable it is to travel in Africa, the film focuses on the country's natural beauty and fascinating exoticism.

The strange thrill story of a savage love…with secrets unrevealed until now!

To the modern eye, this postwar Japanese cartoon is a transitional piece, from the Japanese-mythos story to the modern anime style. The linkag to the older style can be detected in the teams being the rabbits versus the foxes, with the sympathetic character being a fox -- indeed, except for that bit of fantasy, this could have been a live action short.

This film shows the growth of cooperatives in the Maritime provinces and how they brought new life and hope to poverty-stricken fishermen. The Rising Tide is a 1949 Canadian short documentary film directed by Jean Palardy. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
