Photographed by Philip Hanson Hiss, “Holland in the Western Hemisphere" (1942) is a color documentary film about the Dutch Caribbean. Made by the Netherlands Information Bureau, part of the Netherlands' government in exile, the film highlights both the beauty of the former Dutch colonies and Dutch territorial holdings as ideal vacation destination and delves into the strategic significance of the area for the Allied powers during World War II and into the post-war period as a shipping port.

This is a half-reel film telling its audience how to use inedible parts of plants from their garden to make compost. It seems pretty basic stuff, but there were a lot of city boys working in what were called Victory Gardens in the United States. Letting them know how easy it was to make compost for a better truck garden meant a lot of fresh food on the home front.

A beautifully filmed documentary film by Erik Blomberg about the Jämijärvi glider and motor flight training during the war year of 1942. Matti and Pekka are on both glider and motor flight courses. The end of the film is dramatic and charged, and it is not staged. How does a cloud flight training landing succeed in poor visibility when the field is lost? Second part of the Mare Senki (Malaya War Record) series produced by Nihon Eigasha in 1942. While the first installment documented the Japanese advance through Malaya, Birth of Syonan-to portrays Singapore under occupation after its fall in February 1942. The film shows the renaming of the city to Shōnan-tō (“Light of the South”), Japanese victory celebrations, military parades, and efforts to depict the transformation of the colony under Japanese rule. Designed as a propaganda feature, it aimed to legitimize occupation and emphasize Japan’s leadership in the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
