A tricky woman criminal, in league with an international crook, falls in love with the honest detective tracking them.

Katie Abbott, despairing of being a wallflower, is about to attempt suicide in the village pond when she is rescued by a young stranger.

France in the first half of the 17th century, at the time of the Duke and all-powerful Cardinal Richelieu. The courtesan Marion Delorme falls in love with the nobleman Didier de Lassigny, although she is still with another nobleman at the time, the Marquis de Saverny. Marion then leaves the Marquis. This leads to a duel between the two aristocratic gentlemen, although duels were strictly forbidden in these circles by Richelieu. When this becomes known, Didier is put in chains and sentenced to death. Marion sacrifices herself for the sake of her new love, but the sacrifice is in vain. Didier, who refused to flee, is finally beheaded by order of the "red executioner" Richelieu.

The young man answers a classified advertisement and starts work at a doctor's surgery who has just completed his fourth vivisection. The young man is not aware that he is to become the next object of the experimentation. Having dressed up the last corpse in the clothes of the unemployed man, the doctor takes it to the railway track so that it can be run over by a train. Urged by the clerk, the police begin a search and the case is entrusted to the famous detective, Gordon, who is soon on the trail of the mad doctor. He manages to apprehend the doctor and then hands him over to the police. The young man is saved and finds love in the arms of the bank clerk.

While he is away registering his claim, another prospector, Mike O'Hara, comes along, and, seeing no one around, takes possession of the gold mine. When Reid returns, the two engage in a struggle. As Reid is about to be overcome, an Indian slips a dagger into his hand. Reid is about to stab O'Hara when The Good Samaritan appears and stops the fight. Reid and the O'Hara set aside their differences and decide to become partners.

Elderly Spanish nobleman Don Julian is happily married to Teodora, a beautiful young girl, when his protégé, young poet Ernesto, comes to live with them. Vicious gossip spreads false rumors of a love affair between the two young people and the evil Don Alvarez, the most bitter slanderer of all, goads Ernesto into challenging him to a duel. Don Julian, realizing that the youth is no match for one of the best swordsmen in Spain, forces the slanderer into a fight in which Don Alvarez is slain and Don Julian gravely wounded. Ernesto calls upon the dying Don Julian to convince him of his wife's innocence. Misled by his brother Severo, Don Julian believes the youth has come to visit Teodora, denouncing them both before dying, ironically driving Ernesto and Teodora from the house to face the world together.

A jewel thief named "The Black Spider" has been robbing the wealthy of Monte Carlo, and as a joke the girl steals her aunt's jewels. Unfortunately, a detective finds out and suspects her of being the real "The Black Spider".

The hero makes good with the bank president by preventing a robbery and thus wins the daughter's hand in marriage.

Civil engineer Warren Neale rescues a badly wounded Allie Lee after her family is killed in an Indian massacre. Falling in love after nursing her back to health, Warren must yet again save Allie when she is kidnapped by a dangerous bandit.

Harle, a successful French businessman, is so absorbed with his factory that he neglects his wife Claire. One day, Harle's old friend Henri, the Marquis de Puymaufray, comes to visit, and Claire falls in love with the cultured and sensitive man. Several months after his departure, Claire gives birth to a baby girl, Claudia, and dies shortly afterward from neglect and depression. Twenty years pass and Claudia has grown into a beautiful woman. Her father wishes her to wed a count, but she loves Maurice, a young American. During a labor dispute, Claudia is abducted by her father's disgruntled employees and held for ransom. The marquis, who has long watched over the girl, loses his life in a rescue attempt, but Maurice finally succeeds in liberating his sweetheart. After the marquis' death, it is revealed that Claudia actually was his daughter, and Harle, crushed, retires to his country estate, freeing the girl to voyage to America with the man she loves. When eccentric Colonel Wynn threatens to kill Joe Benson if he marries his daughter Dorothy, the couple wed secretly. Their honeymoon at a resort is interrupted by Barbara Dow, a friend who threatens to expose the marriage unless Joe announces that Barbara is his wife.

Poverty-stricken John Hargrave is forced to beg employment from rich mill owner Roger Winton in order to save his sick mother's life. Winton refuses to help, and when Hargrave's mother dies, he swears revenge. Eighteen years pass and Hargrave is now owner of a large paper mill, in competition with Winton. Hargrave and Winton's son, Roger Jr., are also rivals for the same woman, Irene Foster, who desires Winton's love but Hargrave's money. Winton, Sr., in an attempted takeover of Hargrave's stock, bribes labor agitators to create turmoil in Hargrave's plant. Hargrave discovers the plot, foils the scheme and discovers Irene's disloyalty. Although stricken with blindness because of the agitation in his life, Hargrave finds true love with his secretary, Margaret Carlisle. Once his sight is restored, he marries Margaret.

An actress poses as an heiress who died, and dies fighting blackmailing detectives in a burning house.

In order to meet the requirements, Arthur places an advertisement for a temporary wife.

Connie McGill, a scullery maid at the Valentines, dreams of better things. One day, while serving, she sees her Prince Charming, Prentice Blue. Although Blue has nothing but his social standing, the nouveau riche Nathaniel Flint wishes his daughter Helen to marry him in order to gain family status. Flint gives a big party for Helen, which attracts the attention of the Du Geen band of crooks. In a scheme, they furnish the unsuspecting Connie with proper clothes, transforming her, and she ends up at the party dancing with Blue, who is enchanted with her. As she departs, she accidentally leaves her slipper with Blue. Unknown to her, she has aided the crooks in stealing jewels that night, and her slipper contains the key to Flint's safe.

A mail-order bride arrives at a Maine lumber camp but doesn't like her prospective husband.

Jack (Earle Rodney) wants to marry Betty (Helen Darling) but inadvertently offends her parents, who demand “anybody in the world but that whippersnapper!” With the help of an “old time actor friend” (Eddie Barry), he makes his prospective in-laws rue their words.

Karl Breitman, obsessed with the notion that he is a descendant of Napoleon, is driven to restore the monarchy in France. To accomplish this, he courts Hedda Gobert, who, he has learned, possesses Napoleon's papers. Upon winning Hedda, Breitman steals the documents, which lead him to America and the home of Admiral Killigrew where, the papers allege, the emperor's hidden wealth resides.

Weazel Tail Bend was so crooked it couldn't see straight, but one day the town was brightened considerably by the arrival of Miss Betsy Beautiful, whom the School Trustee sent to relieve the sheriff of one of his duties teaching school.

The silent comedy The Engagement of a Student in the Oak Tree (1920) is the first film by producer-director-screenwriter Erkki Karu. It has survived in parts, but there is no more detailed information about its plot. The film was filmed in Tampere and Teisko in the summer of 1919, as was its parallel work Sotagulashi Kaiun järitty kesäloma (1920).

Mistakenly believing that she has inherited a large estate from her father, Olivia Sherwood spends money wantonly. Snub, as a member of the London police force, is assigned to a neighborhood where a terrific free-for-all battle is taking place. After the struggle is snuffed out by a particularly belligerent chap who wades into the crowd and sends its members into the land of twittering birdies with an assortment of right and left-handed blows, Snub steps forth and accepts credit for the feat.

Leona Stafford receives a legacy of $1000 and invests it in a scheme to catch a rich husband. After purchasing a new wardrobe, Leona goes to a fashionable resort hotel where she poses as a widow with a mysterious past. She arouses the suspicions of the hotel clerk, a correspondence school sleuth, who suspects that she has kidnapped Captain Cromwell, a wealthy aviator who has been missing for several days. Desperate, Leona appeals for help to Tubbs, whom she believes to be an idle tramp. Tubbs wins her love before he discloses himself as the missing aviator, causing Leona to heave a sigh of relief that her search for a husband has ended.

When his honeymoon is over, Knox Randall shifts his attention from his wife Ailsa to his business. Feeling neglected, Ailsa accepts her sister-in-law Clarissa's advice that a little jealousy might re-ignite her husband's interest. One day, the railway company in question called him to Calcutta for an interview: they were planning to stop running the branch line for cost reasons. However, McAllan is passionate about the project and uses all his powers of persuasion not to just call off construction. In fact, the construction work will continue, and the engineer is even willing to vouch for it with his private fortune.
