But the message this film sends—“Ladies, the key to beauty is to be fit and be thin”—is still prevalent in 21st-century American society. The various exercises demonstrated here are designed to improve one’s health, posture, muscle tone, and according to the filmmakers, bring happiness.

His Neglected Wife is one of 24 Black Diamond Comedies that were re-edited, re-titled, and released as “Unique Comedies” in 1919. Its original title remains unknown—the year of its initial release was probably 1917. “Susie,” the recurring heroine of the series (played by Leatrice Joy) is the wife in question; fed up being married to an impecunious writer, she leaves him a note (“As a writer you are a flivver [jalopy]. I'm off to get a six cylinder start”) and flees to the city. Her husband secretly follows her, enduring a great deal of symbolic punishment along the way.

There's little sign of war in this attractively tinted film of London landmarks (the Dutch intertitles are mostly self-explanatory), but the film's propagandist intention becomes clear with the knowledge it was shot on 26 September 1917, immediately after a sustained German bombing campaign. The wreckage of a bombed-out house appears halfway through, but for the rest of the film London is depicted as essentially timeless - and, more importantly, intact. [...] -BFI

Pathé turns its eye homeward in this edition of its History of the War series which looks at the internment of "enemy aliens" in Dorset and Surrey. It's not clear if the camp depicted is Frimley in Surrey or Dorchester in Dorset, but the imposing brick walls of the barracks are guarded by kilted soldiers and peppered with anti-German graffiti. The camera then turns on the internees, many of whom wear sailor's uniforms, standing behind a barbed wire perimeter fence as British officers sort and issue linen to the men.

Cecilia is now faced with a difficult choice: Should she marry the Prince who can save the family, and thereby break off the engagement with her true love, cousin Ernst? This film shows Haarlem, Netherlands, at its best: the St. Bavo Cathedral, street scenes, historic buildings, and beautiful parks and villas. Many of these shots were filmed from sailing boats, moving trams, and a church tower.
