Hezar-Dastan was an Iranian epic historical drama television series from 1987, developed and directed by Ali Hatami. Hezar Dastan is considered one of the most important and most influential works of art in the history of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting. The production of the show took almost 8 years, starting in 1979 and ending in 1987, during which Hatami established a large set to represent Tehran in both Qajar dynasty and World War II, retroactively creating Iran's first movie studio and backlot (named Ghazali Cinema Town). The show tells the story of Reza Khoshnevis (also known as Reza Tofangchi), and his life and entanglement with corruption in government, and trying to correct it using not conventional means. El Pecado de Oyuki is a Mexican telenovela produced by Televisa in 1988. It was based on an original story by Yolanda Vargas Dulché, who also adapted the screenplay for television. The original comic book series was in the style of the foto-novela. For the role of Oyuki, the photographer selected the Mexican Japanese Sachiko Tsuchiya. Born in Tepic, Nayarit, she became the most recognizable Asian Mexican of her time. The telenovela was shown in the United States in 1988 through Univision. Dulché's story was also adapted for Brazilian television in 1967 and as a comic published starting April 11, 1975 by Grupo Editorial Vid. The Brazilian version was called "Yoshiko, um poema de amor" and starred actors Luis Gustavo and Rosa Miake.

Coming of Age is a situation comedy that aired briefly on the CBS television network in the United States for three runs in 1988 and 1989. Coming of Age features Paul Dooley and Phyllis Newman as a couple, Dick and Ginny Hale, living in a fictional retirement community, The Dunes, in Arizona. Retirement had not really been their, or at least, Dick's, idea – a former airline pilot, he had been forced to retire by a Federal Aviation Administration rule which requires all U.S. commercial pilots to retire by age 60. Dick hated almost everything about his retirement, including his surroundings. He was appalled by the hot climate, the thin walls separating the Hale's apartment from those of their neighbors Alan Young and Glynis Johns and, apparently, mostly by the contented attitude that most of the other residents expressed. This program was first aired as a midseason replacement in March 1988; although in was apparently not well received and was pulled after only three episodes were aired, it was nonetheless added to the CBS 1988 fall lineup. There, it failed again, and was quickly pulled. The airing of some more episodes in June and July 1989 was apparently a "run-off", an attempt to recoup at least some of the investment in the show by using it as filler during the traditionally low-rated summer months.

Knightwatch is a television drama aired by ABC as part of its fall 1988 lineup. It had been promoted as an original series in light of summer reruns continuing into the fall due to the 1988 Writers Guild of America Strike. Knightwatch centers around the activities of the "Knights of the City", a volunteer group set up to assist law enforcement. It was largely made up of ex-gang members; the program focused on its charismatic leader, Tony Maldonado. Operating out of donated space in the basement of a church, the group practiced martial arts and other unarmed techniques since they were not commissioned police officers and did not use firearms. Keeping young people with violent pasts from reverting to this pattern in their new-found calling was a constant challenge to Tony, as were the interpersonal relationships constantly developing among his young colleagues. Knightwatch was a Nielsen ratings failure, undoubtedly due to being forced to compete with NBC's The Cosby Show and A Different World and CBS's 48 Hours. It was cancelled after only 3 months on the air.

Each story typically spoofs a film genre, such as the "Cinderella" episode done as an Elvis movie.
