It is adapted from the original U.S. show of the same name and first launched in May 2001 with huge promotion and hype from the network and tabloid newspapers. The prize for the winner was £1 million. The show only ran for two series before being axed; many viewers believed it was a knock-off of American excesses. It was generally considered a failure in the ratings, even though it was watched by more viewers than other reality shows at the time, including Big Brother.
