_**Eastern Front drama and action as the Red Army clashes with aggressing Nazi hordes**_ In mid-November, 1941, the remaining 28 men of a Soviet division protect Moscow from German invaders with vastly superior weaponry on a snowy landscape. "Panfilov’s 28" (2016) is surprisingly well done on a technical level for a film that only had a budget of $1,700,000 (thru crowd-funding). If you like Eastern Front WW2 films like “Cross of Iron” (1977), "Dear Elza!" (2014) and "T-34" (2018), you’ll probably appreciate it, but IMHO it’s the least of these. At the same time, I have a friend who ranks it as one of his favorites. The problem for me is that there’s zero action until the 39-minute mark and the conversations of the men up to that point, while well-written/executed, are relatively dull. Furthermore, this is a straight war flick that honors the heroes of the (supposedly) true-life battle near Dubosekovo, so don’t expect any unlikely romances or twists. Like “Gettysburg” (1993), it’s simply about modern warfare, the men who fight it and their reasons for fighting. Despite the realism of everything, including the trench-oriented combat, the movie strangely put me to sleep (but maybe I was just tired). The story is, in essence, the Soviet version of 300 Spartans with one of the soldiers even bringing up that historical account during a march. But the account has proven to be a fabrication of a Soviet newspaper for propaganda purposes. However, it IS true that small groups of Red Army soldiers on the Eastern Front boldly faced hordes of oncoming Germans troops with superior firepower to protect their Motherland. And it’s not like Americans and Brits haven’t made scores of fantastical WW2 pictures with some amount of historical realism, like “Where Eagles Dare” (1968) and “Fury” (2014). One thing that’s amazing is that almost all the tanks used in the movie are miniatures and I didn’t even notice! Except for one actual-size model tank built for the movie, the tanks are 1:16 detailed models. The sequences shot inside the tank, however, used a full-scale model of tank internals. The film runs about 2 hours and was shot at Ivanovo, Ivanovskaya oblast, Russia, with studio stuff done in St. Petersburg. GRADE: C+

Regent Horthy is the leader of Hungary and a German ally, but his favorable standing with Hitler changes as the war comes to an end. Forced to cede Hungary’s power or else witness the execution of his son, Regent Horthy gives up control of his country to the Nazis, who quickly move Hungarians to ghettos and death camps, with no hope in sight. But the despair changes when a young man named Elek emerges. Separated from his family during the relocations and aided by the woman he loves , Elek defies the enemy by becoming one of them. In a race against time, disguised as a Nazi Officer he embarks on a mission to save his family and thousands of his countrymen.
The film is based on the true story about a Soviet KV-1 crew of a Soviet KV-1 tank, under the command of Semyon Konovalov , whom despite being heavily outnumbered by German forces, destroyed 16 tanks, 2 armored vehicles and 8 other enemy vehicles at the village of Nizhnemytyakin, Tarasovsky district, Rostov region on July 13th, 1942.
The film covers the heroic defence of the Brest Fortress, which was attacked during the first strike of German invaders on June 22 1941. The story describes the events of the first days of the defence, including the three main resistance zones, headed by the regiment commander, Pyotr Mikhailovich Gavrilov, the commissar Efim Moiseevich Fomin and the head of the 9th frontier outpost, Andrey Mitrofanovich Kizhevatov. Many years later veteran Alexander Akimov again recalls the memories of the time, when he, then a 15 year old Sasha Akimov was deeply in love with the beautiful Anya and suddenly found himself in the middle of the bloody events of war.

December 30, 1941. Vyazma ('Vyazemsky cauldron') is a small detachment of Soviet soldiers, by fatal coincidence, in an unequal battle with a special unit of the Wehrmacht. However, none of them think about giving up. Each of them was ready to sacrifice his life in order to protect his native land. None of these brave people was born a hero. The myth of the red ghost is a heroic deed without a soldier's Soviet soldier in the Great Patriotic War who instilled in the animals, deadly fear of German soldiers. In place of one of the dead hero was inserted another, and the born myth of the invincible Soviet soldier. The film 'Red Ghost' is about the hope that each soldier will have.
