Starting in Italy in 1952, we see some expectant gents awaiting the birth of a baby. A son! Thing is, the gradually sickening father and his wife can't quite agree on how he is developing. The film takes us swiftly to his own adulthood - he is now an artist, with his own child, and their own problems. It's a film about growing up and changing attitudes that is quite interesting as we move away from the austerity of the post war years and into the more relaxed 2000s, but it's a bit over-scored and the narrative is a little messy. It's not always clear just what's going on but as a circle of life type story, it's good looking production that's worth a watch.
Based on the true story of a black girl who was born to two white Afrikaner parents in South Africa during the apartheid era.
"The Family," an album with a velvet cover, is meant to touch the extended family of man. Formal portraits, bookends in this 80-year saga, enclose the central story, which opens with the baptism of Carlo, a baby in his grandfather's lap, and ends with Carlo as a grandfather with a baby in his arms. And never once do we get out of the house, whose rooms provide the film's structure. Comfort or passion? Carlo couldn't really decide until it was too late.
