เอ็ดดี้ ด็อดด์ เป็นอดีตทนายความด้านสิทธิมนุษยชนที่หมดไฟในการทำงาน ซึ่งปัจจุบันเชี่ยวชาญด้านการปกป้องผู้ค้ายา โรเจอร์ บารอน ซึ่งเพิ่งสำเร็จการศึกษาจากคณะนิติศาสตร์ ได้ติดตามคดีสำคัญๆ ของเอ็ดดี้ และตอนนี้ต้องการเรียนรู้จากเขา ด้วยแรงผลักดันในอุดมคติของโรเจอร์ เอ็ดดี้จึงยอมจำนนต่อคดีของชายหนุ่มชาวเกาหลีอย่างไม่เต็มใจ ซึ่งตามคำบอกเล่าของแม่ของเขา เขาถูกจำคุกเป็นเวลาแปดปีในข้อหาฆาตกรรมที่เขาไม่ได้ก่อ
