  This is a quietly devastating work of rural Chinese cinema that uses the seemingly humble craft of hand-pulled hollow noodles as a lens through which to examine three generations of human resilience on the Loess Plateau. Director 山石 (Shan Shi) and screenwriter 刘毓珠 (Liu Yuzhu) have constructed a film that moves with the unhurried rhythm of the land itself—deliberate, patient, and deeply rooted in the textures of northern Shaanxi life. 周金平 (Zhou Jinping) delivers a remarkably restrained performance as Zhang Jiagen, the first-generation inheritor of the Zhangjiashan noodle tradition, conveying decades of unspoken grief and quiet dignity through little more than weathered hands and a gaze that seems to carry the weight of the yellow earth. The film's decision to frame an entire life through the prism of food production is inspired: the noodles become metaphor, memory, and mourning all at once, stretching between past and present like the very strands Zhang Jiagen pulls from flour and water. Its recognition at the 15th World Ethnic Film Festival with the "Multicultural Award" feels well-earned, not as a token of exoticism but as acknowledgment of cinema's power to preserve vanishing worlds.
