เรื่องราวของหนังดำเนินขึ้นระหว่างปี 1839 – 1889 แบ่งออกเป็น 5 ตอน นำเสนอผ่าน 4 รุ่นของครอบครัว Prescotts นำโดยพ่อ Zebulon (รับบทโดย Karl Malden) พาครอบครัวออกเดินทางล่องเรือจาก New York ผ่านคลองขุด Erie Canal มุ่งหน้าสู่ดินแดนตะวันตก
