In Singapore, an expatriate couple living a monotonous life face upheaval after an encounter with cosplayers in their neighborhood. What happens when an image leaves a state archive and enters the feedback loops of an artificial neural network? Inspired by an encounter that the artist had at the Google Cultural Institute with an image originating from the National Gallery Singapore, Figures of History and the Grounds of Intelligence travels back in time to probe the intersecting histories of state planning, global networks and cybernetics that span from the Cold War to the ongoing boom in generative artificial intelligence. Looking into how different historical figurations have come to make up the grounds of “intelligence” that underpin today’s generative text-to-image models, the narrative focuses on what it means for these models to “learn” from history without actually understanding it in order to generate ever-changing distributions of noise. At stake here is the future of representation itself—a future where images appear to have no history to speak of.

“Crossing Over” is a poetic and reflexive documentary that delves into the ways in which people grapple with mortality, connect with the deceased and give meaning to the spaces for the dead. Laying our eyes on burial grounds and places of commemoration and lending our ears to tales of rituals and traditions that surround death, the film brings both the filmmakers and viewers on a journey to “cross over” from the realm of the living to the land for the dead. The transition from graveyards to columbaria and the replacement of cemeteries with modern buildings prompts a much-needed rumination on the significance that the living bestows on those revered sites and rites, which in turn, defines their relationship with the spaces. The film does not and is unable to provide an answer to the meaning of death and space, but rather it strives to provoke contemplation and reflection on the dichotomy of "for the dead or for the living".

The 49th Hexagram explores the construction of cultural memory and political narrative surrounding the history of the Korean peninsula. Employing the services of an animation studio in Pyongyang, North Korea, Ho Tzu Nyen’s work reinterprets scenes of political uprising and mass demonstration as depicted in South Korean narrative film and television. The project aims to form a direct relationship between South Korea’s political history and the tensions that still define the country’s relationship with its northern counterpart. The result is, in the artist’s words, a “game of exquisite corpse across geopolitical barriers.” The artist developed the experimental soundtrack in collaboration with Korean artists and musicians Bek Hyunjin, Park Minhee, and Ryu Hankil. Offering two vocal renditions of texts from the forty-ninth hexagram of the I-Ching, an ancient Chinese divination manual, the soundtrack composites historical interpretation with translation to speak of revolution and renewal.

Flowers for my mother and father’ follows the artist's tender ritual of layering on ‘flowers’ in its different forms, in tandem. Bright plastic flowers in one frame, to adorn an afterlife; and flowered sheets in the other, to swaddle, to soothe and to hold. Reminders of how love manifests in different forms following profound loss, changing shape to fit the ones that continue to love and be loved.

The film Dewi Murni is an adaptation of Kalidasa’s Shakuntala. This is established through the identification of chronological events that are similar to the story of Shakuntala authored by Kalidasa. Adaptations have been made to the Indian story, transforming it to the Malay version and prominent differences are notable. The principal story of Dewi Murni remains the same whereby the main characters meet in unlikely surroundings, woo and get married. Both King Dushyanta [in Shakuntala] and King Indraloka [in Dewi Murni] lose memory of their wives (in different ways), the heroines lose their signet rings and are rejected by their respective husbands at the palace court. In both stories, the rings are discovered in a fish’s maw and upon its re-emergence, the kings’ memories of their respective wives are regained. In the end after a period of separation, the lovers are reunited. - Sumathi Maniam Raj & Raja Morgan Veerappan
