This film is about one fo the eruptions of the well-known volcano, Hekla, in Southern Iceland. Usually the damage caused by Hekla is in the form of ashfall which ruins farmland and causes poisoning of animals. In some of the bigger eruptions, even farmlands in central Europe were affected by ash from Hekla. The eruption in this film occurred in 1970 and lasted a few weeks.

Icelandic scientists and laymen throughout the countryside have monitored volcanoes and earthquake zones for a long time. In recent years, technical equipment has been developed which enables much more effective work. Included are seismometers and inclinometers, devices which can detect small changes in land elevation in volcanic areas. A network of such monitors and seismometers is now in use, monitoring for example, Mt. Hekla, Katla and the Krafla volcano as well the main earthquake zone in S-Iceland. There is a new inter-Nordic project which aims at developing forecasts for earthquakes.

North West tells the amazing story of one of the biggest rescue operation Iceland has seen after a huge avalanche hit a small fishing village, Flateyri, 26. of October 1995. Before an outside help reached Flateyri the locals were on their own during the first five hours, searching and digging up their neighbors, friends and relatives and organizing the rescue. Many obstacles, such as storm and further danger of avalanches, were on the way as rescue teams nation wide, helicopters and ships tried to find their way to Flateyri. This snow avalanche was on of the deadliest in Iceland’s history, and the 1995 is memored as being the most costly in human lives in recent, local history of natural disasters. This story is told by rescuers, media people, the former president of Iceland, and survivors who some were under the snow for 9 hours.

During Sverrir’s tour of 15 Japanese cities in December 2005, the two artists spent a lot of time together in Kyoto and discussed creating a new project that would permit their sensibilities to meet.
