This classical tale of Shaolin Temple disciples versus the Manchurian Ching government displays Shaolin martial arts at its best in empty hand combat. After the siege of the Shaolin Monastery by the Ching gevernment in the 18th century, students of Shaolin led by Hung See-Kwan, continue to rebel agains the Manchus. Hung then joins forces with the well-known hero Fong Sai Yuk. Hung is now a wanted criminal by Ching leader Kow Ching Chung, former disciple of Shaolin. Fong's association with Hung brings tragedy to his family as they are raided and killed by Kow's troops. Fong and Hung prepare for the final battle as they vow to bring Kow to his knees to avenge Shaolin and their families.

One suspects writer-director Carol Lai may have harboured some Black Swan ambitions with a tale that also centers around a stage practitioner who embarks on an unwitting destructive journey when playing a role to die for. The Second Woman, whose Chinese title Romance Riddle may hold better clues as to how this film developed, being more of a guessing game that threw constant clues rather than a overly romantic film about twins falling in love with a man who decided it's perfectly OK to string both women along, until he discovers that this spells double trouble.

Wong Jing wrote and directed this film, he also co-stars as a shady and bumbling individual who's forced to confront the people who have maimed his best friend and killed the poor guys family. They've also made his life extremely miserable. Danny Lee plays a cop who's job is to protect Wong Jing from a gang of sadistic gangsters. As in all of Wong Jing films, the villains are just plain rotten and they love to hurt and kill people.

This film is put together by three city ghost stories that occurred after midnight. The first story describes a loud mouth slacker cop encounters after being ordered to guard a murder scene alone. The second has a couple accidentally hit someone while driving but could not find the victim's body. The third is about a bad son who is afraid his late mother would return for revenge, so he would rather spend nights playing mah jong with friends and wouldn't dare to go home, unfortunately things in this world have a way to go the opposite way......
