The Shadow Lands Yonder is a collaborative research-based work by Hong Kong artist Lee Kai-Chung and Japanese artist Isaji Yugo. The project centers in Manchuria in the early twentieth century, a time of massive population displacement driven by war colonisation as the Qing empire collapsed and a new nation was still in the making. Based on historical records and memoirs, Lee reconstructs a seven-day time period with video and creative writing, re-enacting the psychological changes and conflicts of the refugees during the long journey of escape and repatriation.

When a group of four children discovers a mysterious phenomenon in the form of a claw machine that can grant wishes, they start to play around with it, unaware that everything comes at a steep price.

The region of Danjiangkou Reservoir in Henan is undergoing the migration of 400,000 people to cope with the South-to-North water diversion project. Seventy eight affected fishing households on one of the small islands in the area are told to move onshore, 200 kilometres away from their homes. They protest in vain and fail to get their way, under government pressure. Meanwhile, a thunderstorm hits the island and destroys all their mariculture rafts. The efforts of generations of self-sufficient fishing families are now gone.

I was invited to a private gathering at Hong Kong Arts Centre to watch television and the fireworks together. It turned out to be a gathering of local artists singing sad songs and telling angry stories, against a room decorated in words of bright red: 'Reversion 1997: I am very happy.' Later I went to the Central part of town to find thousands of people rallying in Victoria Square. At midnight they released multi-color balloons, tied a huge yellow ribbon around the Legislative Council, where the directly elected Democratic Legislators were being kicked out, as of July 1. The action was illegal in the new Hong Kong law. The police blocked the area around the Council soon afterwards, calling it 'private property.'"

The movie is named Fu. This Chinese character represents good luck and yearning for a better life in the future. We animate the Fu and some traditional patterns. We hope that no matter what cultural background the viewers come from, this film can arouse their yearning for a better future and the passion for life.
