This film is an exploration of unseen but intensely felt encounters: dreams. The fear – maternal fear – of loss, of separation from a child creeps into the self, bypassing the defence mechanism. Fear expands in dreams. The film’s images become a potential substitute and a release from the terror of these haunting, unimaginable sensations.

The focus of this documentary film, originally titled Speaking in Tongues: . The Unspeakable Speaking. Glossolalia among Natives, Christians, as an Emergency Language and Poetic Experiment, was the Pentecostal movement in America. The 45-minute video documentary, which was broadcast on Austrian television under the title The Unspeakable Speaking, used glossolalia to examine speech without apparent meaning. By examining speech defects, literary texts and the babbling of babies, forms of articulation for which normal linguistic logic plays no role were explored. The focus, which is beyond moral judgment, lies on various forms of expression and other, possible approaches and representations of reality.

Two men are seen standing in front of an old whitewashed industrial building, smoking and talking. They turn toward the camera with their arms around each other, to pose for a portrait – the camera remains distanced. A tilt guides our gaze up to the underside of the tin roof where metal has been eaten away by rust. Off-screen the sound of drums is heard.
The film consists of documentary shots from the first of May in Vienna, especially from participants in the socialist Mayday parade traditionally strolling through the main avenue in the Prater park after the parade in addition to some previously filmed sequences.

Alternating the individual slats of a set of Venetian blinds, Björn Kämmerer’s Untitled creates a mysterious cadence as it directs attention to the individual shapes and shadows of the shades, creating a vibrating, animated screen with visual music cues.
This is the theme of the film: The secret of objects in the huge space and time curve: the not-being-able-to-recognize, the not-being-able-to-grasp, the not-knowing. The curve is presented in the film as a miniature: 24 hours (morning, day, evening, night, morning) condensed into 40 minutes.

Lisl Ponger creates an imaginary map of the twentieth century on which the stories of emigration are engraved like well-worn tracks of occidental memory. The pictures, made by observant tourists, are revealed, in their tensile relationship to the soundtrack, as a post-colonial journey. A journey through exactly those countries which long ago have been shrunk together in space and time. Finally the wonderful neon signs of the “Hotel Edison” and “Radio City” remind one of the origins of this form of appropriation of the world, of the time of great expeditions, of Benjamin‘s shop-windows and passages, and of the time when technical apparatus and means of transportation fundamentally altered the perceptions of modern man.
