Squash Blossom

This film has a form of dance films. It is not because most of the images of the film show dancing, but because the film seeks for the relationship between movements. The images recorded by video cameras were transformed to films, and the films became my material for this film. I tried to read the possibility of movement from stationary motions in each frame with stationary pictures. Then I connected and related them with movement when finding new relationship. This film is a dance film in that it tries to make images of the implicit meanings of symbolic and abstract movements in dancing and the emotions and memories of dancers.

Analogue Binary System

Images are made between the frames in film screening but they are made by the combination of 1 or 0 (the binary system) in digital display. I wanted to organize the film frames by using the digital signal system. I gathered ON/OFF images from the LED lights blinking on streets of Jongro in night time and I manipulated them. I made the QRcode out of the serial of the black and white frames. If the digital device detect the code, it opens the webpage which has the video of the film screening. For this self-referent sequence, I intended to convey the concept of indivisibility between analogue and digital that digital has originally born form analogue.

Still Moving, Or

The Choreographer and filmmaker have collaborated on the work under some rules. 1. To structuralize the movements such as behaviour, pose and gesture of the commonplace. 2. No to emotion. 3. No to style. 4. To study the condition of secrets to place the body. 5. Direct demonstration not depiction. 6. To equalize the strength of movements. 7. To ensure the initiate of movements independently that does does not contribute to the representation. We did shoot during the day, and collect the images of ordinary landscape without intention. Projecting the inappropriate images of reality in juxtaposition with side by side would lasts as the form where might be acquaintance rather than the image of metaphor.

Wall Rally Drill

‘Wall Rally Drill’ is the third in his film series, preceded by ‘Lifting Barbell’, which was part of “New Skin: Modeling and Attaching”, and ‘Soulseek/ Pegging/ Air-Twerking’. ‘Wall Rally Drill’ begins with the artist’s reflections on the intersections of the actual and the imagined in the aftermath of his breakup, over the Internet, with his long-distance girlfriend. The film “imports” an actual building, Lotte World Tower, into a 3D space. The windows of the building are erased and covered up, injecting a sense of the strangeness of a pseudo-reality. The accretion of reflections on the building’s glass exterior, including the glass of another building and countless other images, prompts thought concerning where existence takes place.

Every Smooth Thing Through Mesher

In this age, our future hides itself behind the outline of the present and is no longer visible, in the same way that Pikachu hides behind the flowerpot in the recent demo of Pokémon Go. Do we live in the past, the present or the future? Are we the back-up data of ourselves or data that is yet to be rendered? Every Smooth Thing Through Mesher, originally commissioned for the Gwangju Biennale 2018, is willing to raise these questions on a summer night waiting for a typhoon.

Lifting Barbells

Kim Heecheon’s Lifting Barbells is a response to his father’s fatal bicycle accident on a street in Seoul, South Korea. Kim traces data collected on his father’s smart watch to reconstruct his last moments. Then, through letters to his girlfriend and images of Seoul, the artist narrates the complexity he faces—navigating the difficulty of his loss, being disaffected by society’s failures, and weighing the impact of technology on his daily life. Lifting Barbells is Kim’s first video in a trilogy that questions new technology and arbitrary distinctions between the “real” and “virtual” worlds we inhabit.
