White Screen (for Amy Halpern)

"White Screen starts with the idea that perception is a worldmaking ability. It is simple: a change in the lens’ focus can either allow us to see a tree or a forest, and brings an understanding that these two things exist simultaneously. Then we see a woman (Martos) tying a rope between the trees. Slowly, she makes a cinema space materialize, as she drapes a sheet over the rope. While the night takes its time to fall, the film explores the screen as a new part of the landscape (perhaps something that exists between the tree and the forest) ..." — Lucía Salas

Four Ladies Dancing

Four eccentric women inhabit the rococo ruins of an isolated gothic mansion, amusing themselves with innocent young ladies who occasionally join them. Their new guest, a quiet and haunted girl, arrives as a borderline schizophrenic. The four ladies taunt and humiliate their naïve young foundling, occasionally speaking to her in nonsensical non-sequiturs. She escapes, returns, and discovers her destiny, joining the countless others who came before her. “Four Ladies Dancing” was originally financed by a grant from The American Film Institute and features an all-female cast.

It was a multi-camera shoot, but back in relatively lo-res days. I have no idea where the masters are but we have been able to get a copy of the VHS and I reckon it’s something that many of you won’t have in digital form. So, I thought it would be a cool thing to share with the Inner Circle. Tracklist: 1. Beware Of Darkness 2. Thoughts 3. In The Mouth Of Madness 4. Cakewalk On Easy Street 5. Al’s Guitar Solo 6. Go The Way You Go 7. June 8. Flow 9. Ryo’s Keyboard Solo 10. The Doorway 11. Walking On The Wind 12. The Light 13. Fire / Waste Away

A Sideshow on a trip to the Abyss

This installation, assembling photographic works from the 1980s, highlights Sayadian’s favorite subjects: consumerism, sex and surrealism. In these controversial shots, the artist was able to express the «unreal» of a society marked by the exponential growth of capitalism and the backlash of 1970s feminism. Between overconsumption and post sexual liberation, explicit and monetized hyper sexualization made its grand entrance into Western society. At that time, sexuality and consumption are intimately linked, and this is what Sayadian gives us to look at through his critical, surrealist and quirky eye, revealing the absurdity of American society in the eighties.
