Based on Akutagawa Ryunosuke's short story The Devil and Tobacco (1916), the film introduces a curious account of the devil's introduction to Japan with St. Xavier in 1549, and how the devil transformed himself into an octopus (or devil fish) to eventually oppress Japanese Christians in the 17th century.

Former detective Gunpei Wakatsuki (Masao Kusakari) and former big thief Otomatsu Sekiya (Takashi Sasano), who live in the luxury elderly housing with care “Sharaku Home”, are a trio of 6th grade elementary school students, Isamu Tachikawa. One day, a baby is taken away at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic run by Isamu's father, Hiroshi Tachikawa (Takeyuki Yue). During the three minutes his mother went to the kiosk, she disappeared.

Using musical pitch as a medium, Ryoji Ikeda translates various kinds of data into an almost abstract code—a perfect sequence of “phrases” that create audiovisual compositions like those in code-verse. A universe of code and a code poem, the installation transforms mathematical code into an independent symphonic or polyphonic work. code-verse has no narrative: it communicates with the viewer’s senses. Immersed in white noise, viewers are invited to contemplate the poetry of mathematical relationships and variations in code in the same way one listens to music.
