Hairareb

Hairareb is a unique portrayal of love and materialism in a time of devastating drought. An aging farmer weds a beautiful, and materialistic young bride, in a bid to save his farm from a devastating drought. Tragedy follows as the unlikely pairing struggle to untangle their growing feelings of love from their originally nefarious motives, both harboring secrets that can destroy the others' hopes and reveal their greatest fears. Set in a dry and harsh landscape, capturing the desperation and aching thirst of the land and the people that inhabit it, the story is brought to life by the delicate portrayal of uncontrolled greed and cunning, tempered by naivete and innocence, and ultimately the genuine affection that grows between the lead characters.

Ping Pong Coach

Although Tsi-an and Yi-rui are an invincible duo in table tennis doubles, Tsi-an’s technique is in no comparison to Yi-rui’s. Tsi-an, frustrated by her sense of inferiority, beseeches the coach, Yi-rui’s father to give her additional drill. During an one-on-one training session, she develops a crush on the coach. Ping Pong Coach adopts Tsi-an’s point-of-view to narrate her romantic fantasy in an understated manner, which in the event gives rise to her bewilderment, joy, disappointment and growth. LIN Yen-chen, who plays Tsi-an, captures the capricious behaviour of the teenagers in her delicate performance, Yi-rui and Tsi-an’s grandmother also leave behind a vivid impression during a brief screen time.

Ballet am Rhein: Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake by Martin Schläpfer

“Swan Lake” by Peter I. Tchaikovsky is the most famous ballet of all time. Since its world premiere in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow there have been countless interpretations of this romantic dance fairy tale. The epitome of these remains Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s legendary St. Petersburg choreography from 1895. In 2018/19 the Ballett am Rhein presents Martin Schläpfer’s version on both its stages in Düsseldorf and Duisburg, in which the Swiss choreographer uses his remarkably individual dance vocabulary – both physical and highly expressive in equal measure – to focus on “all the fascinating darkness, psychic secrets and archetypes” and carry us off into a world “in which ghosts and unexplained phenomena are not yet dismissed as figments of our imagination”.
