Two years later, I invited one of them to make his first return visit to Japan and documented it in Outlaw-Matsu Returns Home. During the filming, my subject Fujita asked me to buy him a cleaver so that he could kill his ‘vicious brother.’ I was shocked, and asked him to wait a day so that I could plan how to film the scene. By the next morning, to my relief, Fujita had calmed down and changed his mind about killing his brother. But I couldn’t have had a sharper insight into the ethical questions provoked by this kind of documentary filmmaking.” —Shôhei Imamura

This film is about the journey that the artist Yoshitomo Nara took along with Hideki Toyoshima and graf AtoZ team, and the others who contributed to the creation of his exhibit AtoZ in Nara's hometown of Hirosaki, Japan. This personal documentary allows one to get a glimpse of the artist's nature, creation process, where Nara came from and where he stands now, plus valuable images of the never-to-be-seen-again fictitious town A to Z and allows one to relive it once again.

Kim Hee-gap is a legendary composer who has written over 3,000 popular songs in South Korea, including Leopards of Kilimanjaro and Nostalgia. A documentary about his life, shot from 2014 until now, showcases the history of K-pop music. These songs are essential to our lives, and their stories live on.

The work documented the story of Yuli, a Hong Kong domestic worker from Indonesia. She is a novelist who won a literature award and also a journalist dedicated to writing. Between the social event that happened in June in Hong Kong, her thoughts and caring about the city are far more from what people used to imagine a narrative of a domestic worker. They are not only domestic workers but they also have other social roles, e.g. a citizen who lived in Hong Kong.

The directors give a poetic demonstration of the spirit of Dali and presents the melodies of the city’s four seasons through the lens. It is also wonderful to see the change of the clouds in four seasons.

Pyongyang, a city full of happy people and flowers. A city of factories with smiling seamstresses and welders of locomotives. A city of power plants the illuminate department stores offering the fruits of the labour of its workers and peasants. Everybody spends their free time in sports palaces with synchronized swimming and white doves, or in the palace of cultures, where young pioneers play the accordion. Old men and women go on walks and young lovers rent boats by the river, above which arches a rainbow, a symbol of happiness and contentment.

Also known as the "Kobe earthquake," the massive earthquake struck the southern Hyogo prefecture on January 17, 1995 and resulted in more than 6,400 casualties. The drama will focus on the reporters working for the Kobe Shimbun, who were determined to keep the newspaper running without interruption, despite the damage suffered during the earthquake. The characters in the drama will all be based on real people, using their real names. Sakurai stars as the photo reporter Tomohiko Mitsuyama, who had joined Kobe Shimbun four years before the earthquake. The show will also have documentary segments such as interviews, including an appearance by Mitsuyama himself.

They fully embrace their kids for who they are, and become pioneer activists fighting for an equal and diverse society.

A Joseon-era urn met by chance at an antique shop in Kyoto devotes the life of Jeong Jo-mun, a Zainichi Korean businessman who succeeded in pachinko, to recovering Joseon cultural assets in Japan. Jeongjo Moon, who was not welcomed anywhere in North and South Korea during his lifetime and did not step on the lands of both countries until the end. About 1,700 cultural assets containing the dreams of his life were reborn as the Goryeo Museum in Kyoto and are there with a will to return them to the unified country. A period of liberation, division, and ideology. Family and acquaintances remember and convey the story of a Korean who tried to find traces of his motherland in Japan's Zainichi society, which was as chaotic as his motherland. And the director captured those memories crudely and plainly.

The elderly are interviewed on the memories they have on the Japanese soldiers who occupied China in the late ‘30s. Some remembered, some didn’t, but the result is an endearing chronicle of what we choose to live with in the old age.

BeSound took a chance to film one of these factories during our factory inspections and surveys in Dongguan - the so called manufacturing center of China. We met and interviewed a few factory workers there. Most of them are incredibly young, and belong to the so called ‘post-90s generation’ (born later than 1990). This generation, as a result of China’s one child policy, has traditionally been claimed as ‘the little emperors’, spoiled hugely by their parents. But when they come to work and live in the factory, what is there waiting for them? Difficulties, hope, helplessness, or a better future?

In literature, movies, and art, weather is an important device to depict events and characters' emotions. What does weather mean to us? Is it merely a backdrop, or does it penetrate through our lives? This documentary unravels the concept of 'weather' from a humanities' perspective!

The drastic economic development in South Korea once surprised the rest of the world. However, behind of it was an oppression the marginalized female laborers had to endure. The film invites us to the lives of the working class women engaged in the textile industry of the 1960s, all the way through the stories of flight attendants, cashiers, and non-regular workers of today. As we encounter the vista of female factory workers in Cambodia that poignantly resembles the labor history of Korea, the form of labor changes its appearance but the essence of the bread-and-butter question remains still.

At the edge of the Yangtze River, not far from the Three Gorges Dam, young men and women take up employment on a cruise ship, where they confront rising waters and a radically changing China.

During the Cultural Revolution in China in the late 20th century, ethnic Manchu people were persecuted and forced to give up such cultural traditions as the shaman dance (tiao tchin, meaning "spirit-jumping" or "god's dance"). However, on Changbai Mountain in Northeast China, a farmer named Guan Yunde decided to start designing and building traditional Manchu shaman drums. At age 70, he is one of a minority of ethnic Manchu people in China's Jilin province, and one of the few people keeping the Manchu shamanic tradition alive.
