Los Rebeldes

In 1968, Peru experienced a popular revolution led by Velasco Alvarado, an initiative spearheaded by progressive military officers who sought to transform the country's social and political structure, moving towards modernization, democracy, and progress for all Peruvians. "The Rebels" reflects this era of change, in which peasants and rural workers in general could finally claim their labor and social rights from landowners who, until then, had acted like medieval tyrants. In this particular case, on a farm in the Cajamarca region, the peasants, encouraged by Velasco Alvarado's popular government, rebel against the abuses of a landowner who wields absolute power over his subordinates.

I Am Cuba

A study in contrasts set in and around Havana that explores Cuba's 1959 revolution: a young woman's fascination with the excess of an American-owned casino leads to her downfall in the eyes of her street vendor boyfriend; a tenant farmer revolts the only way he knows how, attacking the land he works; university students gain first-hand knowledge of political upheaval; and, in the hills outside the city, the members of a poor peasant family are patriotically swept up into the burgeoning revolt.
