‘Adeline’ is a short film. But what it accomplishes in less than 10 minutes will be enough to move you to strongly sympathize with the elderly woman at the heart of this story. Religious institutions have not had the best history with the queer community, but our relationship with religion and our faith in that religion is a complex one. There is an intersection of religion and sexuality that is found here, one that isn’t entirely negative. It may be religion that years away Adeline from the love of her life, but it’s also that religion that offers solace to a woman with a lifetime of desires. Very similar to the 2021 Oscar-shortlisted Best International Film entry, ‘Two of Us’, ‘Adeline’ offers an entry into older queer life with just as much emotional impact. The acting, cinematography, dialogue, it’s all so affecting to craft a vibrant short film.

Departure

An English mother and her teenage son spend a week preparing the sale of their remote holiday house in the South of France. Fifteen-year-old Elliot struggles with his dawning sexuality and an increasing alienation from his mother, Beatrice. She in turn is confronted by the realisation that her marriage to his father, Philip, has grown loveless and the life she knows is coming to an end. When an enigmatic local teenager, Clément, quietly enters their lives, both mother and son are compelled to confront their desires and, finally, each other.
