An up and coming Foley artist is hired to create sound effects for a horror film, but the job triggers forces that goes beyond what's on the screen
We follow up and coming foley artist Vic (Amanda Winston) and her sound engineer Coop (Jason Mackniskas), as they're hired to create sound effects for an unfinished horror film by the mysterious filmmaker Milo Kemp (Bill D. Russell). However, the film triggers forces far exceeding what's on screen. Initially Vic Effects is styled as a documentary, following Vic in her day-to-day job and how she creates effective sound design. The narrative then flips 180 degrees as she's thrown into a living nightmare. I loved this switch in style and is so effective in building character backstory. It becomes clear the props loaned to Vic to finish the new film aren't all they seem. We also learn Vic's experiencing issues in her personal life, and when the two worlds collide it ends in disaster. The premise of this film is truly unique. I've always admired the work of foley artists and sound designers, believing they're the true unsung heroes of the horror genre. Their skill in creating the subtle nuances that build tension often goes unnoticed and to see this heralded and then spun on its head into an auditory nightmare is utterly wonderful. This independent horror blends practical effects with an unmistakable homage to popular cult films in the genre. It's incredible what a creative team with unrivalled ambition can achieve with limited resources and Vic Effects is a shining example of this. The narrative unfolds in a slow burn, but there's plenty here to keep audiences engaged. The way scenes switch between different aspects of the story is well thought out, and this provides enough intrigue to discover how the film will end. Director Chris Shern tips his hat to many roles here, as editor, writer and guest starring in the final scenes. It's clear he has a unique creative direction and a style unmatched in most modern horror films. The performance of Manda Winston as our lead is outstanding. She makes for a great leading role and truly a joy to watch. There's also an incredible performance from Katelin Stack as Woman who steals every scene she's in and is truly one to watch as she could go far in the genre. We also have the ever great 'King of Creep' himself Bill D. Russell. His performance is ominous, unnerving and utterly fantastic - everything we want from this devious kind of role. Dennis Newport is equally outstanding in his performance as Thomas Raven, another ominous character who provides insight into the world of sound design in the documentary sections of this film. If you're a fan of independent monster movies, effects-driven horror and creative premises, Vic Effects is one to watch!
