Shortly before the outbreak of WWI, a peasant from rural Russia arrives in St. Petersburg to find work.

While serving life in prison, a young man looks back at the people, the circumstances and the system that set him on the path toward his crime.

Viktor is oblivious to the hidden agenda of the KGB agent Saveliev, who manipulates everyone behind the scenes in the old rivalry between the Army and KGB.
