Andre Previn: Who Needs a Conductor?

In this Omnibus film, Andre Previn asks the question, 'Who needs a conductor?' 'Conducting,' said Leonard Bernstein, 'is the only profession in the world where you get paid for having a fit in public!' Previn debunks many of the conventional myths that surround the subject, exposing the foibles, prejudices, insecurities and backstage dramas that the general public knows little of. The London Symphony Orchestra, led by John Georgiadis, plays excerpts from some of the most popular pieces in the concert repertoire, including Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Bartok's Dance Suite and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony.

Taking Sides

One of the most spectacular and renowned conductors of the 1930s, Wilhelm Furtwangler's reputation rivaled that of Toscanini's. After the war, he was investigated as part of the Allies' de-Nazification programme. In the bombed-out Berlin of the immediate post-war period, the Allies slowly bring law and order to bear on an occupied Germany. An American major is given the Furtwangler file, and is told to find everything he can and to prosecute the man ruthlessly. Tough and hard-nosed, Major Steve Arnold sets out to investigate a world of which he knows nothing.
