Fables of the Green Forest is an anime adaption based on a series of books published in the 1910s and 1920s by Thornton W. Burgess which ran on the Japanese network Fuji TV from 7 January 1973–30 December 1973. It consists of 52 episodes and was created by the animation studio Zuiyo Eizo. The series has been aired in many countries outside Japan, such as Germany, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Venezuela and Canada. The release of the series into Canada was done through Ziv International in 1978.

The story chronicles the adventures of Ken Tamaki, hotshot practitioner of the traditional Japanese skill toy “kendama.” But kendama is no mere toy. Ken battles rivals, defeats corrupt organizations and even finds love through his favorite pastime. The stakes are high indeed and Ken will have to face his own inner demons if he wants to live to play kendama (or perhaps become a kendama-man!) another day.

Whisked away to the land of Kyou, Akane learns that she is the Ryuujin no Miko, the Priestess of the Dragon God, and meets the Hachiyou, her protectors. The original characters were created in-house, and the same script was produced using two different approaches: an "anime-look version" created in a standard 2D animation style, and a "live-action-look version" that emphasizes the horror of the ghost story with photorealistic AI rendering.
