Europe around 1900: Georges Manolescu is an elegant, handsome, and self-assured con artist. He takes particular pride in being called the “King of Thieves.” Using a wide variety of tricks—sometimes as a marriage swindler, sometimes as an impostor or hotel thief—this charmer manages to swindle 35 million marks. Only the finest society and the most glamorous locations are good enough for Manolescu: Baden-Baden, Nice, Monte Carlo, and, of course, Paris. He shows up there in various disguises and relieves the rich and beautiful of their fortunes. Nothing and no one is safe from the nimble-fingered master thief.

In the heart of Europe lies Switzerland. In its midst yet apart from it, like an island. The Swiss Confederation holds a special position not only politically and historically – in particular, its scenic diversity is something really special: majestic mountains, lush green valleys, craggy rock landscapes and Mediterranean lakes all close together in one small geographical location. Switzerland is proud of its distinction and autonomy, reflected amongst other things in its different cantons and linguistic regions. Each episode in our series “Wild Faces of Switzerland“ seeks to do justice to this diversity.

This is a 7-part German crime series by Peter A. Horn. In self-contained and unconnected episodes, the great detectives of crime literature solve various cases. Sherlock Holmes (Ernst Fritz Fürbringer) and Dr. Watson (Harald Mannl) start things off, followed by Auguste Dupin, David Wilson, Father Brown, Inspector Bucket, Sergeant Cuff and Hercule Poirot. Every episode of this early crime series in the early days of television was still broadcast live. It could hardly have been more irregular: it was broadcast in loose succession on different days at different start times in prime time, and the length of the broadcast varied between 25 and 50 minutes.

Wicked, mysterious and shrouded in legend: the red light of St. Pauli has always had a special attraction. The lively chronicle of this colourful, dazzling place tells stories of corrupt police officers, vigilantes and vigilantism, money laundering and contract killings - but also of family, clan and solidarity. In addition to love for sale, cabaret, gambling, live music and professional sports naturally also settle here. The world careers of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix also began between squats and strip clubs.
