The Afghan Syndrome

The "Afghan syndrome" is the diagnosis of the last generation of Soviet people. This is one of the reasons for the death of the country in which they lived. Since then, Afghanistan has become no stranger to us — and remains so decades later. We perceive any news and stories from there as concerning us. Only after studying the Afghan epic — from the party meetings of the seventies to the mountain code of honor "Pashtunvalai" — can we understand what kind of society we live in today.

Lenin

The Old Man, the Bald Man, Lenin and 148 other nicknames are pseudonyms of the hereditary nobleman Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov. He is a retarded infant, a thin, red–haired teenager, a young student, a provincial social Democrat, a young lawyer who traded his career for exile to Siberia. He is Lenin, the preacher of the armed struggle against autocracy, the man who organized the supply of weapons and ammunition to Russia, whose slogan is "Fight together, go separately" – it does not matter with whom: with dark people or with the general staffs of the Japanese and German armies. An incredibly able-bodied, passionate orthodox Marxist who paved the way to power with his pragmatism.

Golaya Pravda

Golaya Pravda was a television program hosted by Svetlana Pesotskaya on Moscow's M1 TV. After Communism, Russian television channels struggled to gain viewers because of low budgets and lack of programming. To attract viewers, the M1 Network began experimenting in November 1999 with having Pesotskaya strip while delivering the news. Soon the ratings soared and the show became the most widely viewed news program in Russia. Pesotskaya took off her clothes on camera daily with a pair of hands, strategically placed as the only thing to preserve her decency. Golaya Pravda also featured a weather presenter/ecdysiast and other reporters who bared their breasts completely. Besides the titillation value, the dissonance of watching a woman undress and hearing serious news appealed to the Russians' sense of the absurd developed living under Communism.
