Captain Fortune Show

The Captain Fortune Show was a popular 1950s children's television show from Australia starring Alan Herbert that included various segments with puppets, clowns, and other entertainment. Herbert's character Captain Fortune wore a false beard and "naval uniform", and spoke directly with the kids, live and without a script. At the height of the show's popularity, it aired three times during the workweek and also on Saturday mornings. The show also included segments with Uncle Monty and Roy Kinghorn, and is perhaps best remembered for the show's introductory sequence, which involved the young children running into the Captain's house unannounced and gathering around a large barrel, which contained a mannequin. The Captain would sing "Who's that kno-o-cking on the barrel?" several times, after which a puppet would pop out of the top of the barrel and the Captain would put on a puppet show for the young viewers. Alan Herbert played the part of Captain Fortune for four years until leaving because of health problems. In addition to the show, Herbert was known for doing work for many charitable organizations involving children.

AMV

AMV was a music video show broadcast by the Seven Network between 2000 and 2002. It aired between 7AM and 9AM every weekday morning, following the hour-long Sunrise news bulletin. It was canceled in February 2002 when Sunrise expanded into its current three-hour-long format. AMV was similar to the long-running ABC1 music show rage in that it featured no host, and Network Ten's Video Hits in that it aired a combination of new and popular clips. However, due to the early morning timeslot, content was often censored; for example upon broadcasting the controversial video for Robbie Williams' "Rock DJ", the infamous gory ending was not shown.

War That Changed the World

In 1931 Japan invaded Manchuria and in 1937 launched a full-scale invasion of mainland China. That war did not end until the Japanese surrender at the end of the Second World War, in 1945. Using archive material from the conflict, including Chinese footage not previously seen, this program tells the story of the Sino-Japanese War, a major theatre of war whose story is little known internationally. It is a story of major battles, great suffering, devastating bombing. It also encompasses a parallel story which has had a major impact on the modern world: this is the story of the rise of the Chinese Communist Party and the rise to absolute power of its chairman, Mao Zedong who would, when Japan finally surrendered, lead his forces from their remote heartland to success in the civil war and the proclamation of the People's Republic.
