How to Lose a War

In 1941, the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan seemed to be on the brink of conquering the entire world. World War 2 began with a series of swift, stunning and decisive victories as the Axis powers completely took the Allies off-guard. By late 1941, Adolf Hitler ruled over a vast empire that covered Europe, large parts of Russia, North Africa and the Mediterranean. Germany occupied swathes of lands with a population greater than that of the United States. Hitler's Axis ally, Japan, ruled over an empire that was even larger in size. The war, it seemed, was won. And then they lose it all. But how? In five themed episodes, How To Lose A War looks at the numerous missteps that turned the Axis powers' devastating victories into crushing defeats.

The Years That Made Us

Award-winning journalist and author Chris Masters investigates the tumultuous 1920s and 1930s and the events that laid the foundation for Australia in the 21st Century. In Australian mythology nationhood was forged in the slaughter of Gallipoli in 1915. But in this documentary series, Chris Masters introduces a very different proposition. Far from bringing the nation together, the First World War tore the country apart and threatened to destroy the Federation Dream. The Great Depression wrecked a struggling recovery and just when light appeared on the horizon, the gates of hell reopened with the Second World War. This is the story of how the parents, grandparents and great grandparents of today’s Australians survived crisis after crisis and laid the groundwork for the nation we know today. Through the prism of his own working class family, Chris provides extra life, light and shade to the politics and economics of rapid change.

The Fat

The Fat was an Australian sports based talk show television series, broadcast and produced by ABC TV.The series began on 6 March 2000, and ended on 18 November 2003. Host Tony Squires, with regulars Peter Wilkins and Rebecca Wilson ran through the week's sporting news, showing the lighter side of things. One particular highlight of each episode was Slammin' Sam Kekovich's deadpan analysis of all things Australian. Regulars guests included: Dr Turf, Kerry O'Keeffe, Wil Anderson, Jason Akermanis and Liz Ellis. Initially the show consisted of a 30 minute Monday night wrap of the weekend's sports. After gaining popularity, 2002 saw the show extended to a one hour timeslot still on a Monday night. In 2003 the format, scheduling and length of the show was altered, with a one and half hour show being shown on Friday night. Criticisms arose of the new format, which saw the show turn away from only sports topics and into a variety show. The Friday night scheduling eliminated the wrap of the previous weekend's sporting events eventually resulting in a ratings drop and much of the popularity subsided. In February 2004, Tony and Rebecca moved to rival network Seven, to present what was essentially a carbon copy of The Fat, the short-lived 110% Tony Squires.
