Okama is a man who has some problems. First off, his name means 'gay' in Japanese. Next, he has the hots for himself dressed as a girl. Finally, he ends up working at a transvestite bar where he has befriended a girl named Miki. This is not an easy matter to solve, because she only knows him as his female counterpart named Catherine. A television drama adaptation, starring Miyazaki Yoshiko, of the tumultuous autobiographical novel by Chiyo Uno, a female writer who lived through the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras. Having turned 18 that spring, Chiyo took up a post as a supply teacher in her hometown of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Her wayward father had died a year earlier, and the family’s livelihood now depended on Chiyo’s income. Once a plain-looking girl, Chiyo began wearing make-up and started to attract the attention of men. She grows in confidence and matures into a woman who lives freely.

For this reason, the running time of each episode varies greatly. Rentaman was only released on VHS format and published under the Nextart label (Pony Canyon).
