That'll Teach 'Em

That'll Teach 'Em is a British reality television documentary series produced by Twenty Twenty Television for the Channel 4 network in the United Kingdom. Each series follows around 30 teenage students as they are taken back to a 1950s/1960s style British boarding school. The show sets out to analyse whether the standards that were integral to the school life of the time helped to produce better exam results, to the current GCSE results and to compare certain contemporary educational methods with modern ones. As part of the experience, the participants are expected to board at a traditional school house, abiding by strict discipline, adopting to 1950s diet and following a strict uniform dress code. After four weeks, the students then take their final exams, produced to the same standard as contemporary GCE O Levels. There were three series of the show, the first airing in 2003, the second in 2004 and the third and final series in 2006.

Is school succeeding in making a difference? This is the question Sarah Sylbing and Ester Gould, creators of the award-winning series Schuldig, asked themselves for their new documentary series Klassen. Once again, they settle in Amsterdam-North; this time, they focus their attention on the children of Group 8. They are eleven years old when the final recommendation for secondary school is given that will influence the rest of their lives. Not all children can rely on support from their parents; some are on their own completely. Fortunately, there are still teachers who care about them. But is that enough?

Operation Walküre

"Operation Valkyrie" was the name of an official alarm plan during the Second World War. With the help of this plan, the conspirators around Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg wanted to bring about the overthrow of Germany on July 20, 1944. The events are well known: Stauffenberg's assassination attempt failed, Adolf Hitler remained alive. In addition to the purely scenic reconstruction, this two-part, documentary-style film consists of interspersed interviews and reports with eyewitnesses and survivors who were directly involved. Everything that is available in the way of authentic testimony about July 20, 1944 is examined and documented with the highest degree of realism.

Topkapi Palace

The Ottoman Dynasty extended over three continents, surviving 600 years from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. 24 of its 36 Sultans ruled the Empire from Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, for a period of 400 years. The royal residence, which has witnessed moments of great joy and sorrow, became a museum after the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923 by Kemal Ataturk. Until it opened its doors to visitors from all over the world, the Topkapi Palace had always been a mysterious, shuttered world. The "Topkapi Palace" series represents the widest-ranging project of its kind ever to be taken. It was in 1990 that all the doors of the Topkapi Palace were opened to a film crew for the first time. Their lights probed parts of the palace still closed to visitors and, indeed, into places that had never seen the daylight.

MLB's 20 Greatest Games

MLB Network counts down its version of the 20 greatest games played since about 1950. The network first came up with 50 games and a "blue ribbon panel" -- aided by fan votes -- whittled that to 20. Hosts Bob Costas and Tom Verducci dissect each game, and given the format, with each episode running at least one hour, there's plenty of time to delve into nuances such as pitch selection, defensive alignment, managerial moves and so on. Also making each episode must-see TV for longtime baseball fans is the ex-players and managers who join Costas and Verducci to provide insight. Bucky Dent, for example, talks about his famous home run in the 1978 American League tiebreak game, and Johnny Bench and Fred Lynn reminisce about Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, the No. 1 game on the list.
