At the end of the 19th century, the Brandenburg nobleman Dubslav von Stechlin dominated a small town of the same name in the county of Ruppin.

The film depicts the life of the middle-class Kempowski family in Rostock between 1939 and 1945 in great detail and closely following the novel on which it is based. In addition to describing the special events in Walter's life and in the family, there are also repeated depictions of everyday life, such as walks with his father through Rostock, at school and in youth groups, with friends and swing music, at family meals and Christmas celebrations, at church or at the cinema. Father Karl loves cigars from the company "Loeser & Wolff," which always prompts him to say "impeccable, more impeccable, Tadellöser and Wolff" when praising them.

Karl Maiwald, a Dortmund auto mechanic, struggles amid neighbor disputes and family tension. Discovering his company’s clandestine bugging, he exposes management, expecting union backing. Yet the union’s hidden ownership of the firm stuns him, as he realizes the very workers leading protests are its members.

Lugtal, a town nestled between hills, where the citizens feel at home in their half-timbered houses. A dominant figure: Count Brosch, brewery owner and entrepreneur. He is planning a large-scale housing project in the nearby city forest. Some politicians and many committed citizens are opposed to this, striving instead for the renovation of the old town. Against this backdrop, the story of two contrasting brothers unfolds—the conformist Fridolin and the rebellious Max Fantl.
