The Great Patriotic War, winter 1941. Food supplies ran out and supplies were blocked. Besieged Leningrad was dying of hunger: 125 grams of bread per day were given to employees, dependents and children. It was then that a gang appeared in the city, engaged in fraud and robbery. The criminals were mainly engaged in forgery of food cards. The name of their gang, ZIG ZAG, stood for "Defenders of German Interests —The Banner of Adolf Hitler."
The operational search group of the Front Counterintelligence Directorate under the leadership of Captain Alyokhin is looking for a sabotage group codenamed "Neman". The group of saboteurs is headed by a German agent Mishchenko, who is well known to Alekhine, whose task is to collect intelligence necessary for the German command to determine the direction of the main attack of the Soviet army. Alekhine and his group, in the course of a wide search, work out one version after another, but each time Mishchenko manages to get away.
Their call sign is "Cranes", but in the regiment they are affectionately called "cranes". Many consider the platoon to be "charmed", because its fighters manage to perform the most difficult tasks, take "tongues" and carry out sabotage behind enemy lines, returning even from the most disastrous situations. However, in reality, not everything is so simple: outings often end in failures, wounded and dead friends have to be borne by themselves, and each new task turns into a game with death. Their enemy is always treacherous, but resourcefulness, ingenuity and the help of friends help them not to lose faith in their cause and in victory.
Shy graduate student Dmitry Neretin goes to the front to serve as a translator. After several weeks of intense fighting, a lull begins. Battalion scouts advance to the front line and return with a prisoner — a German captain who mysteriously dies at night. Neretin finds out that the captured enemy was killed right in their location. Now Dmitry will have to figure out a traitor among his associates who did not allow the prisoner to betray the secrets of the German army.
